Kids Who Need to Eat Get a Break: Congress approved the $4.5 billion Child Nutrition Reauthorization Act, which, if signed by the president, will increase the amount of money schools are reimbursed for free lunches by 6 cents each, and would allow the Agriculture Department to create new nutrition standards, regulate foods being sold in vending machines, and even set a limit on bake sales or fund-raisers that involve unhealthy foods. via AP
Wine Label Marketing Terms Are Meaningless: The Washington Post digs into a Federal Register notice from (here's a bureaucratic name for you) the Treasury Department's Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau. The notice asked for public comment on whether marketing terms on wine labels like old vines, estate, and barrel select should be strictly defined. via Washington Post
Hexane Isn't That Natural: A new report exposes which "natural" foods companies use soy protein that’s been extracted by using the solvent hexane, which is toxic in large doses. Clif Bar is one! via Cornucopia Institute
Keep Government Out of My Fat Pants: Sarah Palin attacks Michelle Obama for her antiobesity campaign: How dare she tell parents how to feed their kids. via Huffington Post
Food Safety—Here Today, Gone Tomorrow: The food safety bill was (sort of) passed, giving food security a major boost and extending the power of the FDA. The Tester-Hagen Amendment exempts small producers from many of the new controls. However due to a technicality, the bill isn't actually passed, and must go before the Senate again. Republicans are threatening to block it. via New York Times
A Good Look: A map made by Food & Water Watch shows where all the factory farms are located in the U.S. The farms aren't cool, but the map is.
Deaths, Firings, Recalls, and Other Endings:
• Nutmeg sold under the Whole Foods and Frontier Natural Products Co-op labels is recalled, feared to be contaminated with salmonella.
• Household cleaners in California have to be reformulated because they produce too many smog-forming compounds.
Debuts, Openings, and Other Beginnings:
• Top Chef: All Stars debuts.

Food stamps provide AMPLE money for feeding a family. I spend less, and I buy luxury food products. If kids whose parents qualify aren't being fed, they should be removed from the parents' homes. The parents should not be subsided in the neglect of their children.
The health of any nation, or any other large group of animals is directly related to the diet and nutrition of that group. This is invariably relative to the diet available, of course. Well, in a nation such as ours, EVERY source of nutrition is available, and still the CHOICE for 2 out of every 3 individuals is to allow themselves to become obese. This is the national health epidemic, along with the inhalation of carbon, whether from tobacco or the combustion engine. The subsidization of corn sugar and bleached ground wheat has created an advertised, published, media centered industry of processed foods, dominating all other natural food sources. Why politicians are choosing not to keep this factual information in perspective before they open their mouths is inherently the enigma and farce of political objectives.-COLLAPSE
if you keep your kids in a bubble, pamper them, don't ever tell them that they didn't do well, stop them from eating candy and such, then you're not doing your job as a parent. Challenge them, teach them to think rationally, make them aware that the world is dangerous and prepare them for it, then you might be helping them grow to adulthood.
Palin will do anything for publicity including fighting children learning to eat foods that will keep them healthy. Pathetic woman. Thank you First Lady for taking up the cause. Maybe those parents who help their children eat unhealthy foods will begin to pay attention to their childs health. Concerning children leaving food? So what else is new!!
My brother is a custodian at a grade school. The whole school get's free breakfast, they all get freshfruit on their tray every day and 2% milk and juice. My brother said when they bus the tables 98% of the fruit, milk and juice is untouched, the kids said they won't drink "white" milk and don't like fruit and will only drink apple juice. There is no free lunch. The 50% of citizens who actually have an income tax liability are paying for the children of those who don't.
The kids need help, thats undeniable, but we shouldn't forget that anything that the government "gives" it must first "take" from someone else.
Sal, I'm not aware of any federal legislation on what can be sold at bake sales, or an impending legislation. Do you have links to them? I agree I don't want the federal government mandating what can be sold at bake sales but I don't have problems with private citizens suggesting that items be healthier.
mbvmgb. You put a grin on my face. Thank you.
I want good, healthy food for kids, but why do they have to take the extra step and dictate what can be sold at a bake sale? Anyone with an ounce of info about the Ag department's history would not want them to be setting the nutritional standards for their children.
I think both women make good points. But nobody seems satisfied unless they can be rude and snarky anymore. A shame.
chowser, that was brilliant. I hope you don't mind I reposted it on my facebook page (giving credit to "chowser" on chow.com).
Go Sarah, you tell them. I felt the same way when Laura Bush wanted my kids to learn to read and Nancy Reagan wanted kids to say no to drugs. What if I WANT to raise illiterate drug addicts??? And, now I can't have obese illiterate drug addicts. Sheesh.
I don't understand why anyone would mind healthier food choices for our country's public school children. Michelle isn't dictating anything, she's just teaching and trying to do some good. I have seen it and I have lived it -babies and children not given adequate nutrition who grow up to become obese adults.

I am glad to see Bristol talking about teenage pregnancy and abstinence and just wish her mom would use her popular voice to do more of the same. It would be great if they would get together on that subject and maybe even bring up CONDOMS (gasp) as a very simple, inexpensive answer to the problem of teenage pregnancy and abortion.
Ignorance is the real problem here.-COLLAPSE
Yeah I agree, the kids will be very angry as adults when they become workers (under 9.8% unemployment) can even find work instead of lazy spoiled students with rent, car payments/insurance & student loans to pay off will open up their eyes and brains and wonder why their idiotic parents voted for a populists Lefty w/little charisma and political correctness stole their true Freedoms & voted in...+READ
Yeah I agree, the kids will be very angry as adults when they become workers (under 9.8% unemployment) can even find work instead of lazy spoiled students with rent, car payments/insurance & student loans to pay off will open up their eyes and brains and wonder why their idiotic parents voted for a populists Lefty w/little charisma and political correctness stole their true Freedoms & voted in SOCIALISM instead. Sarah Palin just happened to be a mother of five count-em 5 children also held the positions of; town council member; Mayor; Governor of Alaska all along raised five (5) independent children to adulthood whereas Me-shell O had 2 children and never held office with a staff of 35 at a cost to tax payers of 2 million dollars a year too (security for her vacations also cost us another million dollars) Oh, and Sarah Palin also cut down her own Christmas tree, hunted, skinned, froze & cooked up Christmas dinner as well as the whole dam winter as well. Me-shell cost the taxpayers a million dollars for a maker-up artist & a private chef to pick carrots in the WH garden that Me-shell never planted! Your right, they will have all wished their idiot parents had followed Sarah Palin's Plan for smaller wiser govt over Me-shells staff of 35 + + and + plus about 6 million dollars over the course of just 4 years too. Let's all see how their new math figures into O's math and the Historic Blood Bath election results since 1932 whereas the people rejected every policy set out by Me-shell the socialist running as Demo-craps. We'll see who wakes up then. Not only did Sarah Palin hunt, kill, skin, but de-bone & freeze her family of seven (7) meal's for the entire winter of 2010. We'll see what the kids as grown ups have to say then. rotflmao-COLLAPSE
Ha Ha! obviously you're not speaking of moon phases! Witty mbvmgb!
When the kids grow up I doubt they'll think to themselves "Gee I wish I'd listened to Sarah Palin!"
Given the demonstrated outcome of the parenting style of my parents, I'd rather have them teach me how to recognize a false dichotomy than Sarah Palin or Michelle Obama.
Now off to check my spice cabinet...
