How to Roll Dough Without a Rolling Pin

Don't waste your money on kitchen tools you'll rarely use. CHOW Senior Food Editor Jill Santopietro shows you how to improvise if you don't own a rolling pin.

  • I'm usually to impatient to watch videos. A 19 second video is one I can embrace...especially as I need to roll my pate brisee! Thanks.

(PS -- re investing in a rolling pin, I like the using a wine or olive oil bottle that you can recycle instead of having one more thing in the Messy Kitchen Tools drawer.)

  • For a while after I moved out on my own, I didn't have a rolling pin and it was a huge pain in the ass. It's the kind of tool that you don't need often, but when you need it, you really need it.

  • You may be able to roll dough with a bottle in a pinch but personally I like my adjustable rolling pin. It has 2mm/6mm/10mm adjustment discs so I always get the perfect result. I got mine at Ashton Green if anyone is interested.

  • Wine bottles work OK, closet rods work OK, but why not invest in a rolling pin? Didn't you just pay $2 for a cup of coffee? By the time you learn to use it, you'll be glad you have it.
