Catupiry Cheese from Brazil

Whenever I’m homesick, I find consolation in whatever Brazilian food I can locate stateside. Besides a good cachaça, Catupiry cheese usually does the trick and isn’t too hard to find.

Catupiry was created in 1911 by a couple of Italian immigrants living in Brazil, and the recipe remains a secret to this day. It’s a soft, tangy cheese, similar to cream cheese but less sweet. It’s pretty good spread on crackers, but it tastes even better when added to pizza or shrimp dishes.

  • Never heard of this cheese! Hope I can find it in Toronto!!

  • Catupiry is best in pizza when they stuff the crust with it. It's along the same lines as the Pizza Hut concept, but it actually tastes good.

  • I dream about catupiry, on my pizza and in a coxinha de frango.I went to Braz back in April and had the most amazing catupiry pizza in Sao Paulo.Gostozo!!!
