Jeff Potter, author of Cooking for Geeks, fancies up his brownies by baking them in oranges.

T H I S W O R K S !!! You eat the orange before you use the shell. NO WASTE. If it overflows you have chewey concentrated brownie and orange flavor. If its underdone well its like a hot souffle. Orange flavor definitely infuses whole brownie. It looks delicious, smells great, tastes even better.
why would i waste a good orange? And this would not make it taste better, really it does not even look good.
Sounds good !
My daughter and I tried the mug cake ... it was terrible! Neither of us could eat it. I hope you have success with it ... if you do, please post how you did it. Thanks
Eww, don't do the Chocolate mug cakes! They're so rubbery and gross! I tried one when I was living in dorms and then everyone started making them, but they were mostly retarded and didn't add oil or something, so it was impossible to get them out of the mugs... BAD TIMES
I got a "forward" in my e-mail, tried it and LOVED it! It's called "5 Minute Chocolate Mug Cake." You make it in the microwave. I think I am going to try that recipe for the brownie filling inside the orange, try it in the microwave and see how it goes. I'll report back with the results. To the comment about the part touching the orange being mushy, maybe the answer is to scoop out more of the...+READ

5 MINUTE CHOCOLATE MUG CAKE
4 tablespoons flour
4 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons cocoa
1 egg
3 tablespoons milk
3 tablespoons oil
3 tablespoons chocolate chips (optional)
A small splash of vanilla extract
1 large coffee mug (MicroSafe)
Add dry ingredients to mug, and mix well. Add the egg and mix thoroughly.
• Pour in the milk and oil and mix well...
• Add the chocolate chips (if using) and vanilla extract, and mix again.
• Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes at 1000 watts.(could do several mugs in a conventional oven, following time and temp for cupcakes)
• The cake will rise over the top of the mug, but don't be alarmed!
Allow to cool a little, and tip out onto a plate if desired.
EAT! (this can serve 2 if you want to feel slightly more virtuous).
And why is this the most dangerous cake recipe in the world?
Because now we are all only 5 minutes away from chocolate cake at any time of the day or night!-COLLAPSE
For the holidays....I bet you could dress this up buy wrapping a bit of Christmas ribbon around them. And/or decorating the plate with some raspberry or cherry drizzle (for the holiday look).
Regular ribbon and raspberry drizzle the rest of the year.
Absolutely DO NOT make this brownie in an orange recipe. Regardless of the quality of the brownie mix you use, the oozing out part does not bake at the same rate as the interior of the orange. you are left with overdone brownie on the outside and where the brownie meets the small sliver of remaining orange inside, it is pure mush. I made this because i love the taste combo of choc&orange, but...+READ

He doesn't say how much of the middle to cut out
Ghirardeli has very good brownie mix - you can find it in Costco.
Baker's chocolate has the best ever recipe for brownies on its website. It is called Baker's One Bowl Brownies. I have never met an adult or child who doesn't absolutely love them. And it is almost as easy as using a mix!
Hmm. This intrigues me. Problem is, boxed brownie mix is awful. I keep trying to find one that tastes good, but to no avail. I would eat the orange peeling first. And probably last.
It would be amazing if you candied the orange peel first so you could munch it with the brownie! mmm
And on the subject of "why": this is actually a clever idea that can be used for camping! Hollow it out, and bake it over a fire. Single serving awesomeness, with a hint of orange!
Looks like a cute way to use up those peels after the oranges have been juiced! If I am to do this, I might consider fitting the removed top into the bottom of the cavity, rind (orange) side up. This should help get more of the orange flavour into the brownie.
Why? I don't think it's just for the flavor, it's also for the interesting presentation. The outcome looks impressive (to me anyway!) yet requires minimal effort. I love the sort of molten lava look of the finished product.
why you ask? who cares why, it's clever and added an odd but good flavor. just got done with a batch and everyone liked it, thanks.
@kodiakfoodlover and @ttoommyy I would think to do something different and "out of the pan" so to speak, while still being able to use an "out of the box" recipe. :)
Natural orange flavors, compared to artificial ones should ALWAYS be favored as well. Artificial anything = not as good as the original!
My two cents.
Actually, I had the same question. Why? If it is orange flavor that is desired just throw in a shot of grand marnier!
My question is "why?" Brownies are just fine baked in a pan and cut into squares.
Neat trick.
Interesting video, I like Jeff Potter but I was wondering if the orange really contributes any flavor. Is it significant enough? Do you have any delicious crisp brownie edges?
