Russian River Brewing Company is known for being a major innovator in the beer world. Vinnie Cilurzo, the brewer there, makes Belgian-style ales and ages them in old wine barrels, in some cases for more than a year before bottling. My favorite of his line is Supplication (they all have names like Damnation, Temptation, Redemption, etc.): a Belgian-style brown ale that’s aged in French oak Pinot Noir barrels, and has sour cherries thrown in. It’s dry, pleasantly sour, and truly unique. Like Russian River’s other Belgians, it comes in a big bottle with a cork closure, which is pretty cool-looking.
