Fake Street Food from Taco Bell

Taco Bell Cantina Tacos

Taco Bell Cantina Tacos

I Paid: $1.69 for one taco (prices may vary by region)

Taste: 3 stars

Marketing: 5 stars

The new Cantina Tacos from Taco Bell are cashing in on the street food trend. They're soft corn tortillas, meat, onion, and cilantro. And that's all.

  • @Riccardo is correct, two small corn tortillas both prevent self-destruction AND are the optimum flavor balance with a reasonably generous filling amount.

The fast food chains are so chicken-sh** about not offering soft corn tortillas in place of those tasteless 'hard shells' or gummy flour tortillas. Even national brand corn tortillas taste OK if they are steamed first; it's not like Taco Bell...+READ

Their main challenge is to adjust Bubba America's false concept of 'authentic' Mexican food.-COLLAPSE

  • @Yours7ruly

You're wrong about the purpose of two tortillas per taco suave (soft taco). Traditionally, it's not so you can split one taco into two, but rather to prevent tearing/leaking when the filling is generously portioned (which prevents any "overwhelming" by the tortillas). Of course, if you want to divide into two, go for it!

  • Being that I live in a NC town with NO Taco Truck, I actually really like the Cantina tacos.
They're small and not the best, but they're pretty tasty (i like the pork ones) and since there's only one or two mexican restaurants with actual tacos (and they're not much better than the Cantina tacos), I am happy to pick a few up every now and then.

  • Are you really and truly claiming to know anything about tacos and eating both tortillas at the same time?

...and then commenting on "overwhelming tortillas"...

the idea behind 2 tortillas is that the filling is too large for one single tortilla, and therefore should be split. You're "real thing" seems therefore to be targeting non-Latinos with the illusion of authenticity. THere is no need for...+READ

  • I haven't been to a Taco Bell for probably 30 years because the plastic Mexican food does nothing for me. But seeing this story, I might actually try it just out of curiosity. We don't have taquerias around here.

  • I've eaten Taco Bell twice. Once because I was asked to try it, the second because I wanted to give it a fair shake because that's how I am.

    I got sick both times.

    The End. :-)

  • Why would taco bell sell a product that looks like poo?
Why would people buy a product that looks like poo?

  • After reading this article, I had to go out to a taqueria.

  • I ate Taco Bell food once. A friend of mine was very enthusiastic and brought me a selection of items to try. I'm afraid I offended him. The filing looked and smelled like Alpo dog food and I said as much. Ah well...

  • Why won't taco bell go away already!

  • del taco has had one out for years don't just say it's the bell LoL
I do agree tho that they cannot touch the tacos I get from the taco carts (we can't have trucks here in UT)
I'm sorry it will just never taste as good as the vendor's tacos.

  • Carnitas should be discernible shreds of pork. Taco Bell is so fucking retarded and incompetent.

  • Tortillas SHOULD be, if not the main flavor, equal with the filling.

  • I love his description of TB's carnitas.... "oniony paste". WTG TB! FTW!! As for the chicken, when your tortilla becomes the main flavour of your taco then you know something is wrong.

  • Tried one for lunch -- fillings pretty decent, but the tortillas were horrid. (Truth be told, very few street vendors get the tortillas right, either...rubbery cardboard texture).

  • Watching that video makes me want to run out to the streets of Dallas and find some street tacos. Forget those TB impostors. -AK

  • Yeah, the taco bell looks disgusting.

  • @graffitpassion just giving zuchinni crap for being disrespectful. just can't call people bitches.kidding or not. His/her mother would not approve. And anyway wasn't talking to you. Should have rolled my window up(get out of my car) Mind your business.ugh whats wrong with people today?

  • I tried all 3 kinds of these and they are definitely gross. Rubbery tortillas and bland flavor.

  • @Beefsupreme: Just make sure you figure out how to spell Lengua before commenting.

  • Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that barbacoa was goat (or sheep/mutton).

And a hearty "hear, hear" to the al pastor shout outs. That is without exception the first thing I try at any legit taqueria.

  • applebee's authentic mexican? hmmm not likely my friend. Born and raised texan here. You want some authentic mexican look up some recipes by chef rick bayless. Applebee's authentic mexican LMAO. • I enjoy the street fare in Salt Lake City but was surprised to see the large number of cars in line at Taco Bell containing what appear to be people of Mexican decent. So they gotta be doing something right.

  • Authenticity is great but there are some authentically awful, or at least wildly inconsistent, taquerias around; restaurant professionals many of these people are not. I would wager the Taco Bell tacos are better than some of the slop I've been served at authentic places. Of course taco bell will never approach a great al pastor freshly shaved off the rotisserie... yum.

  • do you guys know any mexicans at all? what do you think comes on an authentic taco? not everyone can afford to go to apple bee's for their authentic mexican food experience you bitches!

  • Great story, these aren't items that have been at my local Taco Bell yet. Living in Houston, I have plenty of the taquerias around, so I don't think I would ever stop at a Taco Bell for any of these types of tacos.

  • That's what this stuff is for, folks in the "heartland" who don't have acess to the real thing. They won't like it though because "This ain't a taco, shell ain't crunchy and there ain't no yellow cheese or lettuce on it"

  • i go to my local latin grocery store about once a week and buy all the tacos i want for $1.25 ea and get my choice of carne asada, al pastor, barbacoa, lingua or carnitas. tb gets no love or dinero from me.

  • I agree with you that these would be a good choice if you were in the middle of nowhere (the Ohio turnpike, for example, where the only restaurants are Taco Bell and MacDonald's) that these would be a reasonable choice. They certainly look more edible than anything else that Taco Bell serves, which isn't saying much - Taco Bell has the most revolting food of any fast food chain in the country,...+READ

First, Domino's tries to up their game, and now Taco Bell? Interesting.-COLLAPSE
