At any rate, it sounds just awful. Oreos are a ritual indulgence, a sweet treat whose very nature is defined by familiarity: the grainy cocoa kick of the cookie; the creamy sweetness of the filling.
Here, then, is the shocking truth about Sugar Free Oreos—they aren’t bad at all. They taste eerily similar to the real thing, and could, in fact, probably fool the unprepared taster. The filling isn’t quite as creamy, and perhaps the cocoa flavor of the cookie is less intense, but they’re otherwise remarkably close to the mark.
Another brand of similar cookies (Murray Sugar Free Sandwich cookies) was similarly decent, although the cream was almost totally lost as a flavor. Apparently Oreo-style cookies take to artificial sweeteners in a way that few other desserts do.
Whether this matters is entirely up to you. Some would argue that replacing sugar with artificial chemical sweeteners is a matter of trading bad for worse, and the things certainly aren’t low-calorie at 100 calories per two-cookie serving. That said, the exile of sugar is surprisingly painless from the perspective of taste.

@Trolley I hear ya and had the same experience. There really wasn't any low carb option and no amount of desperation was going to get me to choke down diet coke. But Atkins-inspired cheesecake? I DON'T THINK SO!
So I kind of look at the folks who go through gestation diabetes in this day and age as kind of wusses. We, on the other hand, were tough.
All tongue-in-cheek posturing aside, if I still had diabetes, I'd probably be all over this stuff. It's one thing to get all high and mighty for six months or so. But you've a three in four chance of losing the diabetes after you deliver. To those gals who took the bullet I dodged, know I'm not judging you for resorting to the artificial. Just hope this stuff actually does keep your insulin at a reasonable level and spares your liver or whatever organ system this synthetic crap usually plays foul with. Sometimes you just plain need sweet.
What's gonna be really interesting is that at some point in the future, if the planet's surface doesn't ramp up like a Tandoori oven being readied for some lamb cuts, they're gonna be able to genetically engineer stone fruits and strawberries and probably even bananas that taste okay but are pretty low carb, or that somehow or other, don't mess with your blood sugar. unfortunately, when i had gestational diabetes i would eat sugar free items and it kept my blood glucose in check. it was not something i did often but on an occasion when i was craving something sweet i'd get a sugar free cookie. this would have been handy then.

I fail to understand any of the HFCS and Ace-K and all that CRAP. Why does a ginger ale or coke taste so much better in Japan?? SUGAR and GLASS containers. Keep it simple, stupid. We aren't making progress. We're reinventing the wheel and doing a terrible job at it. It's depressing. Just eat real food in moderation instead of all this frankenfood.

It's bad enough they stopped making them with lard.
I have given up Oreos since with age I became intolerant of something in them....nasty lower GI intolerant. It may have been a blessing as I used to consider a row as a serving. ;)
Or you could forget both altogether, and make these. My wife made me for them once (I cook, she bakes) and I'm sure she's regretted it ever since as i demand them regularly now :-). Heavenly.

The label on the regular one gives specs for 3 cookies and the sugar-free one gives specs for 2, but nutrition-wise, there doesn't appear to be a much of a difference. While I enjoy CocaCola Zero, I'll stick with real oreos

toxic in a report compiled by some of the world's biggest soft drinks
manufacturers - who now buy tons of it to add to diet drinks. Coca Cola,
Pepsi and other manufacturers produced the report in the early l980s before
the sweetener aspartame, had been approved for use in America. It warns
that it can affect the workings of the brain, changes behavior and even
encourages users to eat extra carbohydrate, so destroying the point of
using diet drinks.
The documents were unearthed last week under freedom of information
legislation. It follows a decision by researchers at King's College in
London to study suspected links between aspartame intake and brain tumors.
Britons drink more than 9 billion cans or bottles of pop a year, of which
about half contain artificial sweeteners. Aspartame, made by Monsanto and
also marketed under the name NutraSweet, is 200 times sweeter than normal
sugar and is used in many popular low caloric foods and drinks. It has
been declared safe in a number of studies and has been approved for use in
both America and Europe.
There has, however, always been concern at the tendency to break down,
producing methanol, which is both toxic in its own right and which breaks
down further to produce formic acid and formaldehyde, phenylalanine,
another breakdown product of aspartame, is also dangerous to people with
phenyketonuria, a common enzyme deficiency.
The 30 page aspartame report was drawn up under the auspices of America's
National Soft Drink Association (NSDA) whose governing body at the time
included senior Coca Cola and Pepsi executives. It says: "We object to the
approval of aspartame for unrestricted use in soft drinks." It then lists
ways in which aspartame was believed directly to affect brain chemistry,
including the synthesis of vital neurotransmitters such as serotonin.
Other papers obtained with the NSDA documents show the Food and Drug
Administration also had misgivings. Despite this it approved aspartame.
Dick Adamson, of the NSDA, said that in l983, he evaluated the data on
aspartame and posed a number of questions. Once they were answered, it no
longer had concerns about the safety of aspartame in carbonated
drinks. Ben Deutsch, a spokesman for Coca Cola, referred questions to the
NSDA.

in carbonated beverages.
"The present record does not contain data which demonstrate that the
use of aspartame in soft drinks will not result in the adulteration of the beverages under section 402 (a) (3)of the FDC Act, 21 U.S.C. 342 (a) (3),
which provides that a food is adulterated if it contains, in whole or
in part, "...a decomposed substance or or if it is otherwise unfit for food." Indeed, the present record strongly suggests that the rapid degradation
of aspartame in soft drinks and the consequent loss of sweetness
may well result, under certain actual time and temperature conditions, in
products which would be adulterated under section 402. Without data which
demonstrate that aspartame sweetened beverages will not be adulterated
under section 402 (a) (3) , Searle has not met its burden of proof under section 409 (c) (3) (B) of the FDC Act. 21 U.S.C. 348 (c) (3) (B)."
Aspartame decomposes into a witches brew of toxins, including diketopiperazine, a tumor agent. In original studies aspartame triggered brain, mammary, pancreatic, uterine, ovarian and testicular tumors, and pituitary adenomas, etc. Furthermore, Searle knew it would do it in the population as well. The secret trade information also on web has them admitting that they have to consider complete conversion to DKP and if the FDA found out they couldn't get it approved. The FDA admitted they knew in the Food Chemical News when FCN published Jennifer Cohen's report on an experiment with Diet Coke. Robert Cohen's daughter was then 12 years old and wanted to find out why her diabetic grandmother almost died of aspartame. She had Winston Laboratory do an analysis of Diet Coke in an incubator, at room temperature and in the fridge. Winston Lab analysis showed even in the fridge aspartame had broken down to DKP and
formaldehyde. This report is also on web. Monsanto bought Searle in l985.
The NSDA also said (Docket No. 82F-0305) "Aspartame is inherently,
markedly and uniquely unstable in aqueous media. In a liquid, such as a
soft drink APM will degrade as a function of temperature and pH. Higher
temperatures and more acidic liquids increase the rate of degradation. Higher temperatures may also affect the degradation products which are formed."
The Trocho study demonstrated following aspartame ingestion, significant
amounts of formaldehyde accumulate in the tissues. Formaldehyde is known
to bind strongly to proteins and nucleic acids, forming adducts that are
extremely difficult to eliminate through normal metabolic pathways. They
demonstrated that labeled methanol (as formaldehyde) accumulated in high
concentrations in the liver (50%) and in lower, but substantial,
concentrations in the kidney, adipose tissue, brain and retina. Within the
cell, they found large amounts located within the DNA. (Trocho C., Pardo
R, et al. Formaldehyde derived from dietary aspartame binds to tissue
components in vivo. Life Sciences 63: 337-349, l998.
Coke and Pepsi knew all this and yet sent diet pop to the Persian Gulf
where soldiers say it sat in the 120 degree Arabian sun on pallets for as
long as 8 weeks at a time, and they drank them all day. They were drinking
formaldehyde cocktails. It is no wonder the symptoms of Desert Storm
Syndrome are identical to the symptoms of Aspartame Disease now declared a
world epidemic by H. J. Roberts, M.D. Page S 5508 in the NSDA document
says "Aspartame decomposes extensively in soft drinks under moderate
conditions." These were not moderate conditions. Coke and Pepsi both knew
the gun was loaded! Dick Adamson said NSDA posed a number of questions and
once they were answered they no longer had concerns about the safety of
aspartame. What answer did they give that explained away decomposition into
poison?????
On 2/26/2000 The Atlanta Journal Constitution reported that Coke is closing
their New York store, and Vegas world attraction. Aspartame victim Betty
Blythe wrote Chairman of the Board, Summerfield Johnston, Jr. of Coca Cola
about her symptoms and received a reimbursement check for $21.00. On the
back it said: "By acceptance and endorsement of this check the payee
releases and discharges Coca Cola Bottling Co. of Indianapolis from all
liability of whatsoever nature for loss cost, or damage caused by or
arising out of this accident." And its a stamp. Payment for 12 years of
suffering??!!

Analysis Shows Nearly 100% of Independent Research Finds Problems With
Aspartame

An analysis of peer reviewed medical literature using MEDLINE and other
databases was conducted by Ralph G. Walton, MD, Chairman, The Center for
Behavioral Medicine, Professor of Clinical Psychiatry, Northeastern Ohio
Universities College of Medicine. Dr. Walton analyzed 164 studies which were
felt to have relevance to human safety questions. Of those studies, 74
studies had aspartame industry-related sponsorship and 90 were funded
without any industry money.
Of the 90 non-industry-sponsored studies, 83 (92%) identified one or more
problems with aspartame. Of the 7 studies which did not find a problems, 6
of those studies were conducted by the FDA. Given that a number of FDA
officials went to work for the aspartame industry immediately following
approval (including the former FDA Commissioner), many consider these
studies to be equivalent to industry-sponsored research.
Of the 74 aspartame industry-sponsored studies, all 74 (100%) claimed that
no problems were found with aspartame. This is reminiscent of tobacco
industry research where it is primarily the tobacco research which never
finds problems with the product, but nearly all of the independent studies
do find problems.
The 74 aspartame industry-sponsored studies are those which one inveriably
sees cited in PR/news reports and reported by organizations funded by
Monsanto/Benevia/NutraSweet (e.g., IFIC, ADA). These studies have severe
design deficiencies which help to guarantee the "desired" outcomes. These
design deficiencies may not be apparent to the inexperienced scientist.

I have spent several days lecturing at the World Environment Conference on Aspartame
marketed as NutraSweet, Equal and Spoonful. In the keynote addressby the EPA, they
announced that there was an epidemic of multiple sclerosis and systemic lupus, and they did not
understand what toxin was causing this to be rampant across the United States. I explained that
I was there to lecture on exactly that subject.
When the temperature of Aspartame exceeds 86 degrees F; the wood alcohol in Aspartame
converts to formaldehyde and then to formic acid, which in turn causes metabolic acidosis.
(Formic acid is the poison found in the sting of fire ants). The methanol toxicity mimics
multiple sclerosis thus people were being diagnosed with having multiple sclerosis in error.
The multiple sclerosis is not a death sentence, where methanol toxicity is. In the case of systemic
lupus, we are finding it has become almost as rampant as multiple sclerosis, especially with
Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi drinkers. Also, with methanol toxicity, the victims usually
drink three to four 12 oz.cans of them per day, some even more. In the case of systemic lupus,
which is triggered by Aspartame, the victim usually does not know that the Aspartame is the
culprit. The victim continues its use aggravating the lupus to such a degree, that sometimes it
becomes life threatening. When we get people off the Aspartame, those with systemic lupus
usually become symptomatic. Unfortunately, we cannot reverse this disease.
On the other hand, in the case of those diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, (when in reality, the disease is methanol toxicity), most of the symptoms disappear. We have seen cases where their vision
has returned and even their hearing has returned. This also applies to cases of tinnitus. During a
lecture, I said,and quote, “If you are using Aspartame (NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, etc.)
and you suffer from Fibromyalgia symptoms; spasms, shooting pains, numbness in your
legs, cramps, vertigo, dizziness, headaches, tinnitus, joint pain, depression, anxiety attacks,
slurred speech, blurred vision or memory loss, you probably have Aspartame disease.”
People were jumping up during the lecture saying, “I’ve got this. Is it reversible?”
It is rampant. Some of the speakers at my lecture even were suffering from these symptoms.
In one lecture attended by the Ambassador of Uganda, he told us that their sugar industry is
adding Aspartame. He continued by saying that one of the industry leader’s sons could no longer
walk - due in part by product usage. We have a very serious problem. Even a stranger came up
to Dr. Espisto (one of my speakers) and myself and said, “Could you tell me why so many
people seem to be coming down with M.S.?” During a visit to a hospice, a nurse said that six
of her friends who were heavy Diet Coke addicts, had all been diagnosed with M.S.
This is beyond coincidence. Here is the problem. There were Congressional
Hearings when Aspartame was included in 100 different products. Since this initial hearing, there
have been two subsequent hearings, but to no avail. Nothing has been done. The drug and
chemical lobbies have very deep pockets. Now there are over 5,000 products containing
this chemical, and the PATENT HAS EXPIRED. At the time of this first hearing, people were going blind. The methanol in the Aspartame converts to formaldehyde in the retina of the eye. Formaldehyde is grouped in the same class of drugs as cyanide and arsenic - DEADLY POISONS! Unfortunately, it just takes longer to quietly kill, but it is killing people and causing all kinds of neurological problems. Aspartame changes the brain’s chemistry. It is the reason for severe seizures. This drug changes the dopamine level in the brain. Imagine what this drug does to patients suffering from Parkinson’s Disease. This drug also cau causes Birth Defects. There is absolutely
no reason to take this product. It is NOT A DIET PRODUCT. The Congressional record said, “It makes you crave carbohydrates and will make you FAT.”
Dr. Roberts stated that when he got patients off Aspartame, their average weight loss was 19
pounds per person. The formaldehyde stores in the fat cells, particularly in the hips and
thighs. Aspartame is especially deadly for diabetics. All physicians know what wood
alcohol will do to a diabetic. We find that physicians believe that they have patients with
retinopathy, when in fact, it is caused by t he Aspartame. The Aspartame keeps the blood
sugar level out of control, causing many patients to go into a coma. Unfortunately, many have died.
People were telling us at the Conference of the American college of Physicians, that they had
relatives that switched from saccharin to an Aspartame product and how that relative had
eventually gone into a coma. Their physicians could not get the blood sugar levels under
control. Thus, the patients suffered acute memory loss and eventually coma and death. Memory loss
is due to the fact that aspartic acid and phenylanine are neurotoxic without the other amino acids found in protein. Thus it goes past the brain barrier and deteriorates the neurons of the brain. Dr. Russell Blaylock, neurosurgeon, said, “The ingredients stimulate the neurons of the brain to death, causing brain damage of varying degrees.” Dr. Blaylock has written a book entitled, “EXVIROTOXINS : The Taste That Kills” (Health Press 800-643-2665). Dr. H.J. Roberts,
diabetic specialist and world expert on Aspartame Poisoning has also written a book entitled,
”Defense against Alzheimer’s Disease” (800-814-9800). Dr. Roberts tells how Aspartame
Poisoning is escalating Alzheimer’s Disease and indeed it is. As the hospice nurse told me,
women are being admitted at 30 years of age with Alzheimer’s Disease. Dr. Blaylock and Dr.
Roberts will be writing a position paper with some case histories and will post it on the Internet.
According to the Conference of the American College of Physicians, “We are talking about a
plague of neurological diseases caused by this deadly poison.” Dr. Roberts realized what was
happening when Aspartame was first marketed. He said, “his diabetic patients presented
memory loss, confusion, and severe vision loss.” At the Conference of American College of Physicians, doctors admitted that they did not know. They had wondered why seizures were rampant (the phenylaline in Aspartame breaks down the seizures threshold and depletes serotonin, which causes manic depression, panic attacks, rage and violence). Just possible antidote
for this poison because they are experiencing so many problems in their country. This “poison” is now available in 90 plus countries worldwide.
Fortunately, we had speakers and ambassadors at the Conference from different nations who have pledged their help. We ask you to help too. Copy this article and warn everyone you know. Take anything that contains Aspartame back to the store. Send us your case history. I assure you that Monsanto, the creator of Aspartame, knows how deadly it is. They fund the American Diabetes Association, American Dietetic Association, Congress and the Conference of the American College of Physicians. The New York Times, on November 15, 1996, ran an article on how the American Dietetic Association takes money from the food industry to endorse their products. Therefore, they cannot criticize any additives or tell about their link to Monsanto. How bad is this? We told a mother who had a child on NutraSweet to get off the product. The child was having Grand Mal Seizures every day. The mother called her physician, who called the ADA, who told the doctor not to take the child off the NutraSweet. We are still trying to convince the mother that the Aspartame is causing the seizures. Every time we get someone off of Aspartame, the seizures stop. If the baby
dies, you know whose fault it is and what we are up against. There are 92 documented symptoms
of Aspartame from coma to death. The majority of them are neurological because the Aspartame

People were jumping up during the lecture saying, "I have some of these symptoms. Is it reversible?" Yes! Yes! Yes! STOP drinking diet sodas and be alert for Aspartame on food labels!!! Many products are fortified with it!!! This is a serious problem.

Diet soda is NOT a diet product! It is a chemically altered, multiple SODIUM (salt) and ASPARTAME containing product that actually makes you crave carbohydrates. It is far more likely to make you GAIN weight! These products also contain formaldehyde, which stores in the fat cells, particularly in the hips and thighs. Formaldehyde is an absolute toxinand is used primarily to preserve "tissue specimens". Many products we use every day contain this chemical but we SHOULD NOT store it IN our body!!!
Dr. H.J.Roberts stated in his lectures that once free of the "diet products"; and with no significant increase in exercise; his patients lost an average of 19 pounds over a trial period.
Aspartame is especially dangerous for diabetics. We found that some physicians, who believed that they had a patient with retinopathy, in fact had symptoms caused by Aspartame. The Aspartame drives the blood sugar out of control. Thus diabetics may suffer acute memory loss due to the fact that aspartic acid and phenylalanine are NEUROTOXIC when taken without the other amino acids necessary for a good balance. Treating diabetes is all about BALANCE.
Especially with diabetics, the Aspartame passes the blood/brain barrier and it then deteriorates the neurons of the brain; causing various levels of brain damage, seizures, depression, manic depression, panic attacks, uncontrollable anger and rage. Consumption of Aspartame causes these same symptoms in non-diabetics, as well.
Documentation and observation also reveal that thousands of children diagnosed with ADD and ADHD have had complete turnarounds in their behavior when these chemicals have been removed from their diet. So called "behavior modification prescription drugs" (Ritalin and others) are no longer needed. Truth be told, they were never NEEDED in the first place! Most of these children were being "poisoned" on a daily basis with the very foods that were "better for them than sugar". It is also suspected that the Aspartame in thousands of pallets of diet Coke and diet Pepsi consumed by men and women fighting in the Gulf War, may be partially to blame for the well-known Gulf War Syndrome.
Dr. Roberts warns that it can cause birth defects, i.e. mental retardation, if taken at the time of conception and during early pregnancy. Children are especially at risk for neurological disorders and should NEVER be given artificial sweeteners.
There are many different case histories to relate of children suffering grand mal seizures and other neurological disturbances due to the use of NutraSweet. Unfortunately, it is not always easy to convince people that Aspartame is to blame for their child's illness.
Stevia, which is a sweet herb, NOT A MANUFACTURED ADDITIVE, helps in the metabolism of sugar, which would be ideal for diabetics. It has now been approved as a dietary supplement by the FDA. It is known that for many years the FDA outlawed this "true sweet food" due to their loyalty to MONSANTO Chemical Company.

I assure you that MONSANTO, the creator of Aspartame, knows how deadly it is. And isn't it ironic that MONSANTO funds, among others, the American Diabetes Association, the American Dietetic Association and the
Conference of the American College of Physicians? This has been recently exposed in the New York Times. These Associations cannot criticize any additives or convey their link to MONSANTO because they take money from the food industry and are required to endorse their products.

Aramek- you can get Stevia-sweetened soda at Whole Foods. I believe the brand name is Zevia. The only thing is that there is some erithritol in it as well.
Everything is bad for your health. I just have been falling less and less in love with "sugar" drinks. So, "diet" (they should stop calling it that) tastes better to me, currently.
Course, they should make a soda with Stevia, I'd be all over that.
Aramek--seriously? Diet sodas etc. are pretty bad for your health! Take it easy.
I'm sure they are targeted at diabetics, and speaking as one, the cookies aren't half bad tasting, but diabetics should read the label carefully, since these cookies are still pretty high in total carbs and the sugar alcohols used will still raise your blood sugar, just slower than real sugar.
You can still have them, but they are far from a 'free' snack.
It's probably aimed somewhat at the diabetic market.

I've been cutting down on sugar, not for health reasons, although I should, rather because I'm tiring of the sugary "mouthfeel". So, Diet sodas, etc, so, I'll probably give these a try.
It would be interesting to see ingredient list comparisons when reviewing products like this.
I think it's the new 100-calorie craze. What they don't realize is that 100-calories only allows for two cookies. And I don't think I'm mistaken when I say the originals are around 60-70 calories. I think dieters should just splurge on the full-calorie kind, there's not too much of a difference unless you're eating a massive amount.
Was this product really necessary? Do they think consumers would be that stupid to think that these are healthier for you than the originals? Even if you're diabetic the carbohydrates are still going to hurt you. The nutritional differences are negligible.
