Grow Your Own Cocktails

1 / 11
Bartenders aren’t the most obvious green thumbs out there (don’t they sleep most of the day?), but if they’re serious about cocktail ingredients, it’s likely that they’re cultivating a little patch of land somewhere and growing herbs to use in their drinks (a.k.a. hoeing for hooch). We checked in with people like Daniel Shoemaker, the owner of the Teardrop Cocktail Lounge in Portland, Oregon, who’s installing a rooftop garden for the bar-restaurant. See what they have to say about making the most out of your garden bounty in spring and summer cocktails. See how gardening can enable delicious, homegrown drinking >>

  • Sorry (Duh) not the Basil, I meant the rosemary...

  • Do you just use the basil as a sprig? Does that get enough flavor into the cocktail? It definitely sounds really tasty!

  • I love Basil in cocktails. My favorite is a basil limoncello martini, very refreshing poolside.

  • I am an Urban gardening bartender and happy to answer any questions

  • Rosemary? Tastes great with lemonade...Throw in a little vodka or lemoncello and you'd have a refreshing summer drink.

  • how about using lovage stalks as an edible, celery-flavored straw for bloody maries?

  • Looks like sprigs of Sage in a cup of potting soil with some stirring straws ;)

  • Fresh thyme goes well in gin/chartreuse martinis: http://indirectheat.blogspot.com/2009/05/lazy-saturday-calls-for.html
