Kwanzaa Cooking with Grandma Martha

Cooking with Grandma Martha for Kwanzaa

By Meredith Arthur, Eric Slatkin, and Blake Smith

Cooking over the holidays is best when it’s done with family, especially young family. Small, nimble fingers plus curiosity about family traditions makes the recipes go faster! Here, Martha Jubrey shows her grandson Desmond how to make her candied yams dish for Kwanzaa (here's her recipe).

You know her by many names: YaYa, Nana, Bubbe, Gangy, Grandma. Cooking with Grandma celebrates family traditions. If you would like to nominate a San Francisco–based grandma for our series, please email Blake Smith with your contact information. Bertha Lee/Charley Patton song courtesy of the Internet Archive.

  • The grandson could use some help with table manners but aside from that, he is just adorable. I'd be happy to add him to my family! I liked the video very much.

  • Toodie,

I agree, this kid needs a crash course in table manners, like not starting to eat before all, (Granny), are seated; and not using the fork as a spit and chunking off slabs of food directly into one's mouth. Don't forget what the little square of cloth is for. It is called a napkin.

  • I so enjoy the Cooking with Grandma series! Keep them coming.

  • Know what would have been waaaay better? Sandra Lee's Kwanzaa Cake! :D

The recipe may have involved a whole bottle of vodka, my memory is a bit fuzzy.

  • cute kid--a bit precocious--and old enough to know how to eat properly with a knife and fork. He needs to spend more time with Grandma. I'd never have gotten away with gnawing at something dangling from a fork at that age.

  • That is the most adorable video I think I've ever seen. This is a dish I don't like much, but I want to eat it since it's made with so much love. And MAN what a fun kid.

  • Love this series! That was a great video. Generations in the kitchen, talking, cooking, eating and sharing - what could be bad!

  • fantastic. great job on this whole series. i need one of those special ladles grandma uses to get the yams out of the hot syrup!

  • This series is easily my favourite part of Chow. So glad to see another addition to it!
