When Should You Shake Versus Stir Your Cocktail?

When Should You Shake Versus Stir Your Cocktail?

A. J. Rathbun, author of CHOW-approved cocktail books Good Spirits and Luscious Liqueurs, speaks truth to power: Stir cocktails that you want to stay clear. Shaking will make your drink colder and better mixed, but it will leave you with a cloudier result. Rathbun’s most recent book is Dark Spirits.

  • Not a bartender, but only from what I've heard. Stir is more of a leave the ice in and water it down, and a shake is a get it cold fast and strain and pour before it mets.

If you are more worried about how the drink looks than how it tastes, turn the lights down.
