How to Clean Your Coffee Maker

Maria Cleaveland of Equator Estate Coffees & Teas shares a tip for brewing great coffee: You should clean your coffee maker at least once a year using a product called Cleancaf or by running vinegar and water through the machine. If you do the latter, you’ll need to scrub the brew basket as well to make sure all the coffee buildup is gone.

  • Yeah, out here in Seattle, we don't have a lot of problems with calcium and lime in our water. It all depends on where you live. Of course, no matter where you live, you can cut down on a lot of buildup problems by using purified water.

However, cleaning the basket, carafe, and so on regularly is very important. Those coffee oils in the crevices turn rancid, which turns your coffee bitter.

  • Here in MN, our water is so hard, this has to be done at least once a month. I use the vinegar method, works just fine.
