How to Recover If You Break a Wine Cork

How to Recover If You Break a Wine Cork

Our favorite wine guy, Matt Skinner, dropped by the CHOW offices to share some very handy wine tips, including what to do when the cork breaks as you’re opening a bottle. He recommends trying to attack the remainder of the cork with a corkscrew. If that doesn’t work, or if bits of the cork fall into the wine, you’ll need some additional equipment. To learn more from Matt, check out his new book, Heard It Through the Grapevine.

CHOW Tips are the shared wisdom of our community. If you’ve figured out some piece of food, drink, or cooking wisdom that you’d like to share on video (and you can be in San Francisco), email Meredith Arthur and tell us what you’ve got in mind.

  • a knife and a knotted shoestring will do it.

push the cork in, let the knotted ends of the string sink below the cork and slowly coax it out

  • There you go someone needs to invent a wine cork strainer.

  • ive used a clean white t-shirt, not ideal, but given the options....

  • I've used a small strainer, over a funnel, pouring into a decanter.

  • I've used a coffee filter.
