How to Remove the Pit from an Avocado

As truly sharp knives slice through the avocado skin quite easily, once I have the avocado halved and pitted, I switch to a butter knife to slice or dice it in the skin.
I am so happy to see this tip here. Years ago, I sent it in to Cooks Illustrated and they never used it. it's just the only smart way to remove avocado from its shell and the video shows it perfectly.
Growing avocados is fun, but at some point, I believe they have to be 'grafted' to be able to produce fruit, don't they? I had one in my yard for years that grew taller than the edge of my roof, but it never produced fruit.
Instead of using a knife to retrieve the pit, pop it out with a tea spoon.
Stick a toothpick on each side of the avocado pit. Lay the pit on top of an empty jam jar and watch it shoot roots. Once the pit start rooting burry it in a clay pot with potting earth. Witin a few months you may have the start of an avocado tree. Yeah, free avocado's anyone?
