Valentine’s Day Breakfast in Bed

Valentine’s Day Breakfast in Bed

Make ahead so you can make out

This Valentine’s Day, be lazy. Indulge. Forget about boxes of chocolates, plush animals, and overpriced dinners: Treat yourselves to this make-ahead breakfast instead. Our sweet morning meal can be prepped almost entirely the night before, so you can concentrate on staying in bed all day. And if you’re single, there’s no reason not to have a slumber party with your besties and

swoon over the food, presented, of course, on some classy trays. But if breakfast in bed doesn’t suit you, perhaps you’d like our menu for a romantic dinner for two. Or ignore the day altogether and throw a garlicky cocktail party.

Valentini
Mix up this cranberry-laced mimosa for a blushing cocktail that’s so very holiday appropriate.

French Toast Casserole
It’s French toast that you don’t have to stand over the frying pan to make, loaded with pecans, raisins, and maple syrup for a crunchy, custardy breakfast treat.

Honey-Ginger Pear Trifle
Graham crackers go upscale in this fruit-and-yogurt trifle.

  • It's a school day, so I think I'll surprise my teen girls with the french toast casserole on a tray as I wake them up. A little orange juice and cup of coffee and they should be off and running with a smile on their faces. They are my Sweethearts!

  • Where's the chocolate?

  • I love a good french toast casserole but anyone waxing poetic about breakfast in bed on Valentine's Day doesn't have three kids who are up by dawn ;)

  • I tried out the french toast casserole today. I was worried the top might get burned, but it came out great. A lot of layers of texture - crunchy top, moist bottom and cakey middle. I used apple chunklets instead of raisins and increased the orange zest to about 2 t.

Best of all, a lot cheaper than buying flowers.

  • Hey, guys.

I think you'll find this breakfast casserole to be a big uniter when it comes French Toast. Whereas some recipes are eggy while others are a little crunchy, this casserole has both (an advantage that comes from shingling the toast so it is partially covered in custard overnight while the other part just gets soaked enough to be moist). Hey, guys.

It's a great option for a holiday like Vday when you don't want to slave over the stove doing batch after batch of French Toast and lose precious time with your S.O. Let us know what you think if you end up trying it out this weekend!

  • This may look 'drier' than a traditional French Toast, but it still looks good to me. Maybe if it had a name other than French Toast, we wouldn't all be so hung up on it.

  • It looks dry, like TOAST family!

  • Re: Dr.
That is so odd - because the reason I don't like the look of it - is because to me - it does NOT look "eggy"!
I like my French toast soft and eggy - but this looks dry and crusty to me.
Plus -even though I LOVE pecans - For me French toast is not the place for them! (nor raisins!)

  • I think the french toast looks great. I guess I just enjoy food and not that picky. To me it looks tasty. I agree with CoryKatherine

  • i dunno call me crazy. I like that it looks warm and soft on the inside and crispy on the outside.

I also can eat about 10 pieces of thick-cut toast with a ton of butter so maybe I'm just that kinda girl

  • I will echo the sentiments of the previous posters. It (the french toast) kinda looks eggy...not too appealing. Why not just do a bread pudding if you are gonna make french toast casserole?

  • Same here re: saltyass, micki and Nelly. That french toast looks more like cinnamony toast. Maybe recuperated with some creme anglaise on the side? Or fresh whipped cream?

  • I agree with saltyass - that french toast does not appeal to me at all!

  • I like the concept of the French toast recipe but the result, at least in the picture, looks dry.

  • I disagree! I think that french toast looks DIVINE

  • I have to say, the food on here usually verges on the level of porn, but that french toast looks horrible.

  • is it wrong to want to have the french toast casserole in bed every morning?
