How to Open a Beer with a Piece of Paper

Former CHOW copyeditor Keith Laidlaw shares a technique for opening a bottle of beer with a piece of paper. It’s all a matter of leverage (and folding).

  • You can also open a bottle of wine with a shoe. Put the base of the wine bottle in the shoe, and hit the heel against a wall/floor/tree/car door. Tends to work best with a dress shoe, as a running shoe will absorb too much of the energy.

  • I was stuck in the mountains in Lebanon w/ a bottle of wine and no opener. I found an old jump rope with wooden handles, unscrewed one of the handles, place the end on top of the cork and hammered the cork in with a shoe :)

  • You can open a wine bottle with string, actually. You push the cork into the bottle first, then drop a string in and under the cork the round part of the cork. This takes a little bit of time to get it under the cork, you have to tilt the bottle a little. Once you have it, you can use the string to yank the cork out.   • wanna open your bottle of wine without a corkscrew? no problem, if you don't mind stir it a little! wrap up the bottle in a towel or tshirt and slightly kick the bottom of the bottle against a solid wall or door case. the cork will come out little by little... enjoy!

  • i just proved that you can NOT open a bottle with a bicycle lock key... or at least, i can't! i about pried off my index finger trying. :)

  • i've actually seen this trick some time ago on another website - you can open beer bottles with pretty much anything hard - lighters, keys, etc - even another beer bottle

  • for opening a wine bottle....I sometimes have to use a screw and hammer....not fun but always works!
