2009 Presidential Inauguration Menu
Celebrate with food inspired by Barack Obama’s favorites
Warning: This is a partisan menu. We don’t advocate celebrating every inauguration. But on this January 20, do it. After studying up on reports of Barack Obama’s likes and dislikes, and spending way too much time
watching videos on YouTube of the president-elect eating (his press people never responded to our queries), we pulled together the following menu. From the looks of it, the man’s not afraid to eat. And if this isn’t your idea of a celebration, the menu’s just as good on January 21. (Chowhounds have their own ideas about what to serve.)
» Chile-Lime Peanuts
» Slushy Blended Margarita
The nuts and margarita are a nod to the cuisine of Rick Bayless, chef-founder of Topolobampo, a Chicago restaurant that’s one of the Obamas’ favorites. NPR did a good segment with Bayless back in October about cooking for the soon-to-be first family.
Barack Obama is known to boast about his chili recipe, telling California’s North Coast Journal that “if you make it right, it’s just got the right amount of bite, the right amount of oomph in it and it will clear your sinuses.” Our recipe is similar, but we leave out the beans.
Since cheddar is Obama’s “cheese of choice,” according to an interview his personal aide, Reggie Love, did with the New York Times, we paired our cheddar biscuits with the chili.
» Roasted Delicata Squash Salad
Love also noted that Obama is big on vegetables, particularly spinach and broccoli. Our salad pairs lightly wilted spinach with pumpkin seeds and roasted winter squash.
» Pumpkin Pie with Spiced Crust
The president-elect likes pie, as evidenced by the video below in which he mentions it 15 times. Our pumpkin pie with a spiced crust is a good fit.

What do you mean that you "don’t advocate celebrating every inauguration."?
Just because your guy loses, you go into an 8-year snit? Is that what happens?
The worst for me is the chili recipe. Ick! Obama should be embarrassed.
Whatever it is, it ain't chili.
Obama is NO food lover.
Even the biggest Obamaphile would have to be drunk to eat that and think it was good.

Hey, guys! Everyone I know is together for once and blissfully happy in anticipation of the new start Obama is giving us all. Hope you can lighten up & enjoy. No one mentioned his favorite sweets, chocolate dipped fleur de sel caramels. I made them for tomorrow & they are sooo good. A lot of work, but worth it.
Let it be ,I like chinese food so I can only eat chinese . Be real and stop making everything a race issue
Liberal latkes pair very well with chili con commie.
Actually, Obama first shared his chili recipe with the media here: http://bit.ly/hVwK. This was months before any other media picked up on it.
Its a great thing Howard Dean never made it to the white house. He banned fried food for the 2008 democratic national convention.
I hope the food police are kept at bay during the president's tenure.
I love sweet potatoe pie! And given the reference in the video so does Obama...Maybe it should be on the menu too!
I think the menu is good, and the fact the Obama likes cheddar and pie are just to more things to add to the list of why I like him...
I think you are all crazy to be making such a fuss over this. Lighten up! Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeesh.
Are you all really being this petty and pathetic? I mean really? The whole "You're insulting 'insert race here'" thing is pathetic. This is a poorly written attempt at trying to be cute and relevant to the inauguration and what not. Getting all pissy is just missing the point. As it stands though Some of this sounds pretty good, though given that the event starts at 8am I'd have expected a bit more of a brunch style menu than these heavy dinner dishes. I know that I'd rather something more simple at 8am.-COLLAPSE
ijhot,
I see my comments on who is the President went right over your head. No surprise. When my "true self" was demonstrating for civil rights in Selma and Montgomery in the sixties I had hopes that things would change. Please don't disappoint me further. Let racism die.

Don't take pie too seriously! It's not a political statement or way of life... it's just tasty, tasty pie.
when did President elect Obama ever say that he liked Pumpkin" Pie? you "alcan" are showing your true self. the end of this article has a video that mentions pie fifteen times, there is no mention of pumpkin pie, i will continue to believe that very little thought was given to this menu by chow.
The President is George Bush. Since your remarks indicate you are ignorant of that, you might be viewed as insulting your OWN ethnic group.
It's not insulting Obama to suggest a menu based on his stated preferred foods... ???
Why would a whole ethnic group be insulted by a suggestion of pumpkin pie on inauguration day?
you are insulting the president and a whole ethnic group by suggesting that we eat or make pumpkin pie on inauguration day; sweet potato pie is the one and please stop this sort of menu choosing without doing better editorial preparation.
