How to Cut Hard Squash

Former CHOW Food Editor Aida Mollenkamp uses a serrated knife to saw through the tough skin. Alternatively, she wraps a meat tenderizer in a towel and “hammers” a cleaver into the side.

  • very nice tips! I love squash and I always end up getting my straight edged knife stuck and I have to pick the whole squaush up with knife stuck in it and smash it on a cutting board.....Like Vivian said, your ways are much more civilized....thanx!

  • good tip about wrapping the pounding device though, so as not to damge the back of the knife blade.

"Take care of your tools and they will take care of you" my dear hubby used to say.

I like the microwave tip, too.

  • Great tip, Querencia! Will try next time instead of all the whacking it usually takes. Much more civilized!

  • Re cutting acorn squash in half: there is an easier way. Stick it in the microwave for three minutes then cut it easily, remove seeds, add butter etc, put in hot oven, bake. (Perforate with knife before putting in microwave so it won't explode.)
