  • If you go buy a pre-packaged mushroom (in whole form) you need to clean it very well. Well unless you own the mushroom company.
    I don't care what anyone says, screw the paper towel wipe off.
    Run under water. don't soak. Use sprayer and fingers.
    Then at least you won't have to chomp on that medium they are growing in.

  • I've never heard anyone say they were worried the flavor would wash away. The reason I've always heard not to submerge mushrooms in water (or wash them under running water) was that they become waterlogged. This has been proven by food scientists not to be the case. So now I always wash mine in running water.

  • I was always told to never wash mushrooms, but simply to wipe with a damp towel. (Would always wash them anyway).

  • I usually just flush the package with running tap water a few times and keep dumping the water. No more than 30 seconds or so. Then dry them with paper towels.
