On to Chicago

A new raft of Top Chef contestants enters the kitchen

Nimma is the first to go from season 4, but anyone coming to CHOW to look for her exit interview won't find it: She didn't want to talk to us about her salty shrimp scampi. We're improvising with a flashback to two previous seasons so that you can relive the triumphs of Hung and Ilan. We're looking forward to more manly takes on soufflé (nachos?), some emotional friction (can Jennifer and Zoi, the couple, be competitive and supportive?), and lots of swearing and posturing from Andrew. Come back next week!

I love Top Chef and dont even mind Bourdain, the one i cant stand is Rocco Despirito(sp). After watching him on his reality show where he borrowed a considerable amount of money to open a restaurant with his name in NYC and then ran it into the ground with such arrogance in general and acting as though he is G-ds gift to the female world, it amazes me that anyone would hire him for anything on tv. His credibility is nil in my book. I think if i heard him mention his Mamas meatballs one more time i would vomit from it. But as to the show, Top Chef, i love it and really look forward to each new episode. The new group is still too new to see what any specific chef is actually capable of yet. They are all still fun to watch. Could have done without Ilan last year. I wonder who is he possibly stabbing these days.-COLLAPSE

  • madrusec, I did notice, I've noticed a reduction in his snarkiness on the newer episodes of his No Reservations show

Could this be a newer, mellower Bourdain? Is he on Prozac?

Hope not, he's more entertaining the other way. Maybe they didn't want the contestants getting too depressed and using their chef knives on themselves after a filleting of their egos from Bourdain.

  • I though that Bourdain was actually acting very nice compared to other times when he was an invited judge on the show. Anybody else noticed this?

  • I found the head to head competition format interesting. I guess it is necessary when there are so many chefs involved this season (the largest class ever I think) and would like to see more of it, at least until they get down to a managable number to have everyone on the same page.

  • Not surprised the person spouting all the "I'm here to win, not make friends" static was the first to leave.

A friend remarked that the couple will not suffer from the homesick blues that seems to affect some of the non-single contestants, so that's to their advantage. Either that or they'll wreck their marriage.
