The Year in Food 2007

Chang Dynasty

David Chang of NYC’s Momofuku Ssäm Bar, Momofuku Noodle Bar, and Momofuku Ko seems to have come out of nowhere. All at once he was named Chef of the Year by GQ, profiled by the New York Times, snagged a Beard Award as Rising Star Chef of the Year, and became the darling of food writers everywhere. We chalk it up to his maniacal love of pork—he was ahead of the curve on the pig mania that reached full flower this year. But it may also have something to do with the fact that he’s a nice guy: When CHOW asked Chang what he thought about all the publicity, he said he was trying not to “believe in the bullshit and turn into a big asshole.” —Aïda Mollenkamp
