Denny’s Is Japanese for Awesome

If you've never seen the Dadaist science fiction masterpiece known as Demolition Man, a) you're missing out, and b) you won't be familiar with the movie's thought experiment that in the future, every restaurant—even the fanciest purveyor of haute cuisine—will be Taco Bell, a result of that chain's triumph in the fast food wars of the present day.

Pause for video clip:

The remarkable thing about this prediction is that it has—in a way—come completely true. According to a highly entertaining story in Eater, the Denny's in Japan have completely gone off the Grand Slam/Moons Over My Hammy reservation:

"And a new item off of their 'special truffle menu': Beef Rossini style with liver pie, a dish of New Zealand Beef topped with foie gras and sliced truffles, served with a red wine demi-glace reduction (it's a classic French presentation). All for 1380 yen, or a rather affordable $15 US!"

Holy. Moly. Next time you wonder when the crazy sci-fi future of tomorrow is going to arrive, remind yourself: Thanks to the iPhone, Predator drones, and truffled foie gras at Denny's, we're there.

  • Anyone familiar with the Japanese Denny's knows that only the name is licensed. Everything else is *WAY* different...

I'm an American in Tokyo and on a budget. I've never gone to a Denny's when I was in the States, but the image of a cheap, frozen, and heat-lamp-dried spagetti meal kept me out of the place until recently. What a surprise! There are regular to pricey places that deliver wilted salads and crusty yet soupy pasta. Even McD's would be shamed by what some popular business lunch places dish out. But the Denny's I've experienced in Japan are an image buster!
Happy, efficient servers. Prompt delivery of the meal at a very proper temperature. A menu that considers the seasonal availability and sourcing of ingredients, competitive pricing. And the guiltless allowance of leisurely spending time over refills of beverages. And, for Japan, the use of actually comfortable chairs or cozy enclosures. Clean, roomy and sci-fi modern bathrooms.
Oh, and lest I forget to mention; the food is standardly good at every location that I've been at.
Denny's will never be Tour d'Argent, but it is a leader of the type of "family" restaurant that it is. I'm very happy to say that I am actually happily freaked out every time I go there.-COLLAPSE
