Unless you live in a community with a Muslim bakery, you may never have heard of this aluminum pie plate of goodness, which pairs cooked navy or red beans with a milky custard in a flaky crust. This five-minute documentary plumbs the origin of the delicacy, and will make you want to eat one.
Bean Pie, For That Nation of Islam Flavor

The dish did originate with the Nation of Islam in the 1940's and spread throughout the African American Community, not the other way around. When I first moved out of Chicago the biggest food I missed was bean pie. It hadn't made it down south yet. It's finally here, but it isn't quite the same. Still tastes great though.
I had one from a stall at the Lexington Market in Baltimore. I'm pretty sure it wasn't a Muslim bakery, though. Bean pie didn't originate with the Nation of Islam -- apparently it was an existing "soul food" dish that was promoted by them. Anyway, the one I had was delicious.
