“Diet” No Longer a Four-Letter Word

One thing to know about me is that I do not drink diet soda. Ever. Just imagining the stale flavor of a diet soda makes me cringe. But having a recent urge for a regular pop, I stopped into my local corner store and grabbed a bottle of Stewart’s Black Cherry Wishniak. After exiting the store, I noticed I had accidentally grabbed a diet soda. Curses! What’s worse, it was too late to take it back because I had already popped the cap off. Begrudgingly, I took a swig, and instead of that flat, artificial sugar-staleness, I was happily greeted by a full-flavored, not-too-sweet black cherry flavor that could fool even me. The Chowhounds and I agree that Stewart’s has given us hope that a diet soda can actually taste good.

  • Of the mainstream diet sodas, Dr. Pepper makes the best one.

  • I'm always in search of a good diet soda.....Try Market Baskets in New England....the orange is very good and the ginger ale isn't bad. I also like Barq's root beer. I'll definately give Stewart's a try. Never seen Boylans or Pangelheimer's, but I'll keep an eye out. Thanks for the suggestions.

  • Boylans Diet Cream Soda is really nice, too. I also drink Pangelheimer's Diet Ginger ale.

    Lots of better diet root beers than A and W: Boylan's, Fitz's, Stewart's, Hansen's...

  • I thought Splenda was supposed to revolutionize diet fare since it's "made from real sugar". While I prefer Coke and Sprite Zero over regular diet Coke and diet Sprite, the Splenda still doesn't come anywhere close to the taste of a real, full sugar soda. It still tastes oddly, artifically off.

  • I'll second that Stewart's Diet Orange Cream is pretty good and add that A&W Diet Root Beer is likely one of the best diet sodas ever made.

  • The Stewart's Diet Orange Cream is also pretty good

  • I had a similar experience switching from diet back to regular, but once you are back and then you try diet again, you realize how bad the diet sodas really are.

  • I've been drinking diet soda for so long that the sugary ones taste bad- and make me thirstier than before I drank it. My real love is iced tea, green, oolong, or black- no sugar, thank you s much. Tastes so much better than sodas, and better for you.
