“Fun Flavors” or The Dark Future of Cheese?

Right in the middle of an otherwise civilized interview with Wisconsin master cheesemaker Roger Krohn, the Green Bay Press Gazette breaks some rather disturbing news. Krohn says that the Center for Dairy Research in Madison, Wisconsin, "has actually developed 'Fun Flavors' of string cheese, which should appeal to kids. They have come up with flavors such as bubble gum, sour apple, and raspberry. I have had the opportunity to sample this flavored string cheese, and it is quite good. It combines 'sweet and salty' which is a very popular combination in snack foods right now."

In defense of my home state: Wisconsin makes more than 600 varieties of cheese, regularly wins more international cheese competition awards than any other country (not state; country), and was recently in the news for its ultra-luxe 15-year-old Hook's aged cheddar.

So... on that note, let's welcome Fun Flavored string cheese with glad hearts and an open mind. Who knows! Bubble gum flavored cheese! Could be surprisingly subtle and nuanced!

Ai yi yi.

  • Oh, Lord. Not only does bubble-gum flavored string cheese sound revolting but StopBloggingAndCook is right on target. It's a sad state of affairs when children expect food to taste like candy when it's supposed to taste like food. I mean, would it be such an awful thing for little "Caitlin" or "Owen" to snack on cheese that tastes the way cheese is supposed to taste? Wouldn't it be better to...+READ

Wouldn't it be better to teach kids to enjoy and have FUN eating foods that aren't sweets and isn't supposed to taste like sweets?-COLLAPSE

  • Stop pontificating and cook

  • Its fun flavor. These cheese recipes are yummy!! Children love this fun flavor.

  • If 'fun flavors' are required to make cheese appeal to children, this is proof that the 'parents' aren't spending enough quality time with them.
Better yet, use the time machine to prevent the parents from procreating!

  • The French will have a field day with this.

  • "Fun Flavors" should automatically disqualify any product from being labeled "cheese."

  • This is just another way in which our culture tricks children into thinking that chemicals and artificial additives add up to make food. Food is for encouraging growth, maintaining healthy bodies, providing fuel to life's activities, and daily socializing rituals. Food is for encouraging growth, maintaining healthy bodies, providing fuel to life's activities, and daily socializing rituals. Making food fit into the criteria of 'fun' is a two-edged sword that has already bitten our collective culture in the butt. It may be fun, but it stunts growth of appreciation and respect for real food, the eating equivalent of talking baby talk to your child.-COLLAPSE
