Make Your Own Counter

The classic Parsons counter is the best purchase my husband and I made for our small kitchen. It acts as a breakfast table and a chopping block, and also creates a focus space for cocktail parties. An added plus is that if you buy it at Room & Board, you can choose the materials of the base and counter (we chose natural steel and cherry).

Parsons table, approximately $500

  • I found an old chemistry lab table and use it for the same purpose. The top is stainless steel and designed to withstand acid spills so I can do whatever I want to it. Also, it's huge so we have separate prep and eating areas. It was hugely expensive ($700) but worth every penny.

  • I have the Parsons coffee table and end tables with travertine marble tops. They are great!
