‘Tis the Season to Hate Rachael

According to The Boston Globe, Rachael Ray hatred is as much on the rise as the Loud One’s exhausting career.

The Rachael Ray Sucks Community is an outwardly innocuous space on LiveJournal where hate-minded individuals can spew anti-Ray diatribes to their hearts’ content. On any given day, you can find posts such as these:

Then she made a ‘chowDAH-mac’. ‘I have to call it chowda because I’m a New England girl teeheeheeheeheeheesnort’. I guess this is some vile mixture of crab and corn cowdAHH and macaroni and cheese. She’s calling this ‘Easy Entertaining’. I’m not kidding.

and

I just finished watching her 30MM show today on how to cook a Thanksgiving meal in one hour. I caught just the last ten minutes as was absolutely stunned. The so-called pumpkin soup looked like vomit. The apple & brandy ‘gravy’ looked like thickened transmission fluid. The muffins were an abomination…She even dumped the transmission fluid on the ‘microwaved green beans.’ If I was a guest being served this sh*t on Turkey Day, I’d walk out.

The Globe article reveals that the founder of this big steaming pile of sneer and loathing is Michigan resident Misty Lane (someone, I think, who will never need smack her pet’s name and street name together to determine her porn name). Lane created the site three years ago when she wanted to share her Ray-centered scorn with others.

A cooking enthusiast who enjoyed picking up tips and inspiration from ‘true chefs,’ Lane complained that Ray trafficked in culinary ‘common knowledge.’ And that she kept waving her arms.

‘She just used to drive me crazy,’ Lane says, laughing.

Having written for Television Without Pity for seven hate-filled years, I’m not surprised that hate is a powerful uniting force or that this particular Rachael Ray hate site now has over 1,000 happy members.

Isn’t there some famous quote about how you can measure success by the number of your enemies?

the funniest, yet telling, ironic things ive seen/ heard recently, is how her big fat yapper has totally gone out on her! she sounds like a new jersey hooker with empyzema! ray, this is gods way of saying "SHUT THE F UP!!!!"

I can't stand Rachael Ray's personality; the girl-next-door image is all a facade. Word from just about anyone who has known her or worked for her refers to her as a "diva" or a flat-out "bitch." Her recipes are almost never as "figure friendly" as she claims; contrary to what she believes loading on a pound of cheese on top of veggies isn't a justification to eat cheese because the veggies are there. A recent article in an online publication out of San Francisco compared a recipe for chicken nuggets with dipping sauce that appeared in her Yum-O! charity book, aimed at cooking for families. They compared the nutritional information to that of a 10-piece McNuggets from McDonald's and guess what Rach? YOU LOST. She lost handily in every category from calories to fat to carbs and especially sodium. This from a woman who claims cooking at home allows you to control these factors. She should listen to her own advice, because feeding kids enough sodium in one serving of nuggets to sustain them for a week is not healthy.

I feel sorry for the people who actually think she's doing good and are duped by her TV persona. She's all about herself, calling a charity event her organization put on to help out a few aspiring chefs the "most important day in HER life." What about the kids? The more I hear/read about her, the more I despise her. And for those who say, if you don't like, don't watch, it's not that easy when you go to buy crackers or olive oil and there's her mug plastered everywhere. Now she's apparently promoting some dog food (produced by one of the companies who were recalled last summer), and the wretched magazine with photoshopped covers is everywhere. She can't be avoided. Hopefully all this over-exposure will kill her off sooner than later. I for one, can't wait to see her disappear forever.-COLLAPSE

I just read this post from BoyOmega and want to offer kudos on the content which is a clear understanding, to me anyway, of the real issue and the articulate manner in which it was expressed. One of the problems of our modern society is the lack of ability to assess and express our feelings and opinions. So displeasure in some aspect becomes 'hate' directed at the representative of the issue.
Anyway, I think enough has been said on this topic, particularly with the nice, clear addition of BoyOmega's excellent comments.
Enough, that is, on the Rachel Ray version of what's wrong with our culture! As for the rest, we need far more about it and we need for it to matter to more people. I've come to realize on further reflection that it's not even Rachel Ray that makes me so annoyed, though I don't like her program; I can't even comment on her personally because I don't know her. It's the mass culture of mediocrity that's elevated her to her position within it. Now that needs work and a lot of it.-COLLAPSE

I say we start hating things like high fructose corn syrup and how it has damaged our culture instead of hating Rachel Ray and her 30 minute baked macaroni and cheese!-COLLAPSE

Not saying I am a true fan but I also don't promote hate for people I don't know and have not done anything to me. "I want to throw food at the tv"? Come on fat girl- you threw it in your mouth! You say she is fat- you are most likely fat! And if not then what the hell is your problem? Get over yourself. Why be so critical? I guess you are perfect...I know you are annoyed "Darth Vader" but understand that we are laughing at you. Why can't people just be okay with the success of others? Lack of success for them? I would guess. Now I am just waiting for you to justify yourself- let's go. I know you are educated and beautiful and NOT fat. (Right-fatty) Yum-O! haha too much fun. I love fat people- don't worry about her dislocating her shoulder- she has enough money cause people like you keep her name in the paper. Are you mad now? Respond cause I would love to hear it (but you will have to put the cookie down to type) I promise there are more and your thighs will continue to expand later when you pick up your eating again.-COLLAPSE

I think I can nail this one right on the head, here we go.

We expect more from our country and culture, we give these icons their power and money from our hard work, and they have a responsibility to nurture and better us. Not appeal to the lowest common denominator for financial success and self power, feeding off us like vampires.

The pop icons of society are supposed to be our servants, to better us and elevate consciousness. Now do you understand why people are peeved? Instead of elevating us and giving us something these people are taking from us, spreading evil, selfishness, stupidity. But even worse they are occupying valuable spaces in society that the truly deserving people should be occupying. And they set the rules of the game, trickery, lying, war, back-stabbing, these become the rules of the game, instead of honest talent and hard work...

These false icons are turning the world of culture and art into something very very vile, the very thing it is not supposed to be...But the power is still in our hands...

  • Not only is her food appalling...she's not even funny. I want to throw stuff at the TV whenever she opens her stupid mouth!

  • Seems like in order to be able to maintain a site about hating Rachael Ray, you'd have to do an awful lot of watching Rachael Ray.

Wow. Are there really people who have that kind of time, energy, and desire to devote to someone they claim to hate so intently?

    Scary.

    And pathetic.

Why bash her. If you don't like her, bash the networks. I guarantee you the networks won't give a crap because Rachel Ray is making a lot of money for them. You people are totally ridiculous.

  • I think if Bourdain takes out a contract on her I'll volunteer to carry it out. And yes, I'm very irritated at her success. Apparently in America nothing succeeds like mediocrity. She's just one more embarassment along with a president who can't string two words together properly and a media that relentlessly covers Brittany Spears while our government goes down the toilette'. I would also like to say that it took me about three minutes to turn to the local Korean channel. I don't speak Korean but anything was better than her show.

Let's start with your blanket generalization about everyone who dislikes Rachael Ray. I would rather have my fingers amputated with a cheese grater than watch Rachael Ray. I also do not think that culinary school is necessary to teach someone to cook. Of course people's parents and grandparents teach them culinary arts. That's how so many incredible recipes get handed down and traditions continue. So, to say that ALL of us believe that you must be a certified chef to teach someone to cook is nonsense.

I don't even mind that she talks with her hands. I think that people are annoyed by her exaggeration. Maybe they're concerned that she'll dislocate a shoulder. No one says that she should stand with her hands by her side but a little moderation would probably be nice.

Oh, and now for my favorite...

    <
The statement above is hypocritical and misinformed. I have a life and am a successful professional. I am stating that not because I care what you think of me, but to prove you wrong. In one sentence you are telling us not to criticize Rachael Ray and criticizing those of us who do. If you don't see the problem with that then my small post won't help you. In a place where we openly call the Vice President of the United States things like Darth Vader and Satan; you're upset because people are mean to Rachael Ray? You've got to be kidding me.

We are allowed to feel annoyed. Is there absolutely no one that annoys you? Come on, Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, Chupacabra? Rachael Ray's incredibly grating voice and disgusting recipes are enough to annoy me. Those are concrete enough reasons. I don't care if you like Rachael Ray, but don't judge other people for disliking her.-COLLAPSE

I would like to outline my thoughts here.

At no time during the E special was there a reference to Ms Ray been a certified Chef. Are the haters saying you have to be certified to teach people how to cook? My mother was never a certified cook and I remember her teaching all my sisters and cousins how to cook and bake. People you do not have to be a certified chef to teach people how to cook.

If she uses her hands to illustrate her points what is wrong with that? I present to customers all day and constantly use my hands to illustrate a point. You much either be very boring when you talk if your hands are constantly by your sides when you speak. Try it and see what happens.

Most of Ms Ray haters either do not have a life or just hate for no concrete reason. This is the problem with America today. We give people audience for things like these. None of you have met the lady personally, but you hate here a pretty strong word too for no create reason. That is just stupid and completely not understandable.

No one asks you to watch her program. There are others programs showing on television. Just click the channel and stop this hate business.

You all should leave this lady alone and get on with your lives.

Finally does anyone know the direct email address of the creator of the site (who is propagating this hate). Is there no law against this in America? How can I get in contact with that person? I feel pity for their family.

I am open for a debate or discussion.-COLLAPSE
