A Peek Inside Mollie Katzen’s Home Studio

When photographer Chris Rochelle and I visited cookbook author Mollie Katzen at her home in Berkeley to watch her make a flipped lasagna, we got another kind of treat: a rare outsider’s visit to her art studio. Though Katzen is immersed in food, she’s devoted to her art. She famously hand-lettered and illustrated her early books, Moosewood Cookbook and The Enchanted Broccoli Forest. And for her latest, The Heart of the Plate, she did the watercolor illustrations and charming endpaper collages. We saw bits and pieces of those in her lofty upstairs studio, as well as figure studies, recipe ideas, crazy little creature cutouts, books of inspiration, and an original black-and-white photo of the author at Moosewood in Ithaca, New York, when she was part of the collective in the 1970s. Enjoy a personal look at this tirelessly creative food author. –John Birdsall
