Bay Area Cult Fave Charles Chocolates Is Back!

The story of Charles Chocolates has been a little murky. Chocolatier Chuck Siegel opened a sleek demo kitchen in the East Bay city of Emeryville in 2007. That closed, and Siegel eventually reopened in high-profile Westfield Centre near San Francisco's Union Square, but after less than a year—poof!—Charles was gone.

After a threatened bankruptcy and a Kickstarter campaign, Chuck and his chocolates are back in action in the Mission. Siegel purchased his namesake business back from a former investor, according to Marcia Gagliardi's Tablehopper newsletter.

As for the chocolates, the early word on Chowhound suggests that Siegel hasn't lost his knack. The fondly remembered triple chocolate almonds (coated in milk and bittersweet chocolates, dusted in cocoa powder) are back, along with several other Charles classics (including the pavé that hhc calls "yummy"). But vulber probably isn't alone in wondering this: Will Siegel's stellar hot chocolate find its way back?
