LA Weekly’s Tien Nguyen Venn-diagrammed the overlap between what national food media thinks LA’s notable food is, compared with the places Angelenos actually go to eat. Not surprisingly, New York journalists find it hard to navigate (or even understand) LA’s vast metropolitan basin, and tend to stick to Hollywood and Downtown.
Meanwhile, LA residents have cars. As Nguyen says, “Far more Angelenos than press ... considered regions like the San Gabriel Valley and Thaitown as destination-worthy parts of the city rather than anomalies outside of it.” Cool—but then Chowhound users could have told Esquire or The Wall Street Journal that. Nguyen’s breakdown is worth a look.
