Where to Eat Near the Barclays Center

No one will be going hungry at Brooklyn's Barclays Center. The sports and entertainment complex that opened this past weekend lays out a vast and uncommonly local spread for this kind of venue, enlisting homegrown vendors like Calexico for Mexican, L&B Spumoni Gardens for pizza, and Blue Marble for ice cream. But for the most part this is arena grub at arena markups, so Chowhounds are swapping tips on more diverse eats nearby.

One bite you won't find at the concession stands is duck confit with mango jerk sauce, an example of the Caribbean-accented French food at Kaz An Nou, just a buzzer-beater heave from the arena. Other options close by are The Vanderbilt for hound-endorsed small plates, Cornelius for craft brews and $1 oysters, and ChickP (pictured) for Middle Eastern. Farther down Flatbush Avenue are two reliable Japanese options, Taro Sushi (pictured) and Geido, and Franny's, a hound favorite for upmarket pizza (moving next year to larger digs a few blocks south).

Across Flatbush Avenue is Park Slope's Fifth Avenue strip, a rich feeding ground that boasts one of Brooklyn's best higher-end choices, the pan-Mediterranean Convivium Osteria, as well as New American at Melt, gastropub fare at Alchemy, and Italian small plates, pastas, and crostini (pictured) at Va Beh'. This corner of the Slope also has creditable Latin chow at Cubana Café, Bogota Latin Bistro, and El Viejo Yayo; Middle Eastern at Miriam and Kulushkät; and dressed-up hamburgers and hot dogs at 67 Burger and Bark (pictured).

To the north, closer to the Brooklyn Academy of Music, there's decent Italian at Caffe e Vino, seasonal American at Stonehome Wine Bar, and Haitian at La Caye.

Most of these restaurants are small, so it's a good idea to make reservations, jen kalb advises. "It remains to be seen whether our local restaurants all get overwhelmed," she adds.
