Two Spots for Authentic Chinese in the Conejo Valley

Despite its active Chinese community, the Conejo Valley has traditionally offered limited options for authentic Chinese eating. But this seems to be changing, says Los Angeles Chinese cuisine expert Chandvakl in a recent Chowhound discussion. The latest addition to the area is Green Onion. Nondescript and nearly invisible, it's nevertheless the real deal, Chandvakl says. The secret is to order only from the Chinese Specials menu, which is kept behind the counter. Beef roll and baked garlic fish fillet are both quite good. It may not be San Gabriel quality (and it's about 50 percent more expensive than a typical restaurant in San Gabriel), but it sure beats a cross-county drive, Chandvakl says.

Another interesting option is Mandarin Express, liu says. It's in a strip mall behind a Jack in the Box, but it's a genuinely gourmet Chinese restaurant. Chef Dan is quite creative, liu says—he's very capable in the kitchen, and uses quality ingredients. He's also willing to adapt dishes to diners' preferences. Mandarin Express also has excellent desserts—"waaay beyond fortune and almond cookies!" liu says. It's got an extensive selection of loose-leaf teas, too.
