Where to Find Fantastic Salads

Salads often play second fiddle to heartier dishes, but sometimes they make for a fantastic meal. While Boston has its share of mediocre salads, there are some standouts too; the keys are creative combinations and fresh ingredients. Here are some great salad recommendations from Boston hounds, just in time for warm springtime weather.

Za: Two locations, in Cambridge and Arlington. The beet salad "never fails," ginafly says; it also contains apples, red onion, parsley, hazelnuts, and goat cheese. Another good bet is a take on tortilla salad, made with black beans and avocado.

Rendezvous: BostonZest loves the Boston lettuce, cheddar, apple, and pecan salad at this Central Square restaurant. The seasonal salads are also excellent.

YoMa: This Burmese spot in Allston offers a "nice selection of interesting and refreshing salads," nasilemak says. Try the tea salad, made with Burmese fermented tea leaves.

East by Northeast: opinionatedchef thinks the biggest strength at this Cambridge restaurant is the selection of innovative Asian salads.  "Kale with smoked tofu, edamame, smoked trout, [and] lemon sesame cream, anyone?"

New Golden Gate: Jellyfish salad is a highlight at this Chinatown restaurant—it's tossed with flowering chives, crispy tiny fish, and garlic chips.

Mr. Bartley's: Most people come here for the burgers, but TheScribe insists that the Greek salad is worth a try. "The dressing is incredible and lots of great ingredients in the salad."

Strip-T's: This Watertown restaurant serves two impressive salads. The "Wicked Small Caesar" is anything but small, and teezeetoo says the grilled romaine salad with oxtail is "fabulous."
