Overheard on the General Topics Board

"The Christmas cookie tradition originated with the Dutch and Germanic settlers who first came to the American colonies in the 17th Century. It stemmed out of the tradition of [making] special baked goods using what was then the expensive commodities of sugar, dried fruits and spices, during the Christmas season which was much more of a bright highlight during a long and dreary winter than it is for us these days." – Roland Parker

"Horseradish roasted new potatoes. (No, wait, don't go ... they do NOT taste like horseradish!) Melt a half stick of butter, stir in about a 1/4 C prepared chunky horseradish. Toss new potatoes with mixture, s&p to taste, roast at 375 [degrees Fahrenheit] for 45 minutes or so depending on potato size. They're nutty and flavorful, but you'd never, ever guess horseradish [is in] them." – shanagain's suggestion for a great side dish

"Every Christmas, I make big batch of rouladen for my wife, since it's been a family tradition for her since she was a little girl. I can't bring myself to tell her that I think it's a waste of some really good meat, and I'm frankly not that fond of it. I make it because I know how much she loves it and looks forward to it, so it's an annual Christmas gift to her." – ricepad
