Pie Versus Pie: Olallieberry Taste-Off

Oh, it's on: Karen_Schaffer conducted a pie tasting pitting Duarte's olallieberry pie against the contender from Gizdich Ranch.

The juicy Duarte's pie, brimming with whole berries, had a thick, tough crust that didn't win over Karen_Schaffer's tasting panel. The mashed-together berries in the Gizdich pie provided a consistent, intense flavor, though some tasters preferred the tart whole berries studded through the Duarte's filling.

While the vote was close, there was a winner. Of 12 tasters, 7 preferred the Gizdich pie.

  • Neighborhood designations are tough (and seem always to change, in the case of San Francisco).
North Coast is correct here, and according to our resident native (Pescaderian?). The name comes from its relation to Santa Cruz, not LA; see: http://www.metroactive.com/papers/cruz/09.12.01/dining-0137.html

  • Duarte's Tavern is not on the "North Coast" unless you live in Los Angeles.
