"Went to a potluck last night at my son's school here in multicultural Queens, and someone brought the oddest contribution that I've ever seen. It was a skewer with half a hot dog mounted lengthwise (with the end sliced crosswise, to make a four-pronged 'flower') and at the end of the skewer was a marshmallow. ... Is this a cultural snack with which I am not familiar?" - esteban

"I'm stumped on how to consistently pick a good one, but a farmer friend says to check for a sappy substance on the stem if there is one. If not, I usually check for tell-tale signs that the melon was allowed to ripen in the sun—usually a very yellowish portion where it laid on the ground." - gordeaux on how to pick a watermelon

"I mix 50/50 white Koshihikari and Haigamai Koshihikari. The Haiga rice is fully milled but only partially polished, so retains the germ. It has many of the benefits of brown rice but is closer to polished white rice in color, taste and texture. This mixture gives a significantly lower glycemic Index than standard medium grained Japonicas like Cal-Rose." - applehome
