Hound hearts exploded with joy when a local distributor popped in on a thread discussing the sought-after Mangalitsa pig, a Hungarian heritage breed known for its rakish curly hairdo and "fat cap" that makes for succulent meat.
Recently nocharge ordered a dandelion and cherry salad with Mangalitsa lard at Perbacco; Spatlese heard that the butchers at Star Meats in Berkeley expected a delivery of Mangalitsa pig parts.
Naturally, hound extraordinaire Melanie Wong is on the case—she contacted a local distributor of pork from Heath Putnam Farms in Washington state, to no avail ... until he appeared in the thread and confirmed a URL for information on ordering.

Star Meats here! Sorry to disappoint but, the Mangalitsa rumor is just a rumor. We used to have a producer of Mangalitsa pigs but, alas he has since gone out of business. While we loved this breed we sold almost every hog at a loss overall because of it's very high price and relative obscurity. We certainly look into this new lead, but as of yet, are not expecting a delivery.

We've been bringing in an Ossabaw-Hereford cross once a month, from Brock Fulmer's Black Sheep Farm. Brock has a very small operation in Potter Valley California, and has gone to great lengths to have his hogs USDA slaughtered and delivered to us. These are some of the most beautiful pigs and of us has every seen. The breed has some similar characteristics to the Mangalitsa breed, but is not "the" wooly pig. We encourage chowhounds to check out this unique and delicious heritage breed and it's fascinating history and role in modern science.
