Tasteless Dragonfruit?

Are dragonfruit tasteless? JenBoes recently tried one from a grocery store in Kauai, and while it was “refreshing—a great treat for a hot day,” it didn’t seem to have a very strong flavor.

rworange likes dragonfruit—on its own, in a salad, or in a drink, white or pink—but finds that quality varies a great deal depending on the source. “Be careful about buying dragonfruit,” she says. Her vendor grows them locally, and they are wonderful. “But the ones from places like Trader Joe’s and even one of the best produce markets are pretty tasteless,” says rworange. “They are usually imported from Mexico. Look for a shiny skin and the skin should be thin. If they have a dull looking skin, skip.”

  • I have eaten Dragonfruit in Thailand and in Vietnam and it is quite bland indeed. It is pretty if you scoup out the pulp and use the shell as a serving dish for sayt a mixed fresh tropical fruit salad.

To me Dragon Fruit has far less flavour than a kewi. I love mangoes the most. Papaya is great and I even like Durian.

  • I ate dragonfruit in Maui, and thought it was delicious. I picked one up at the grocery store (for $8!!!!) and it was terrible. Tasteless, with a musty after taste. I complained to the store, nicely, and they cut one for us in the store, and it tasted the same - tasteless and musty. They didn't appear to be over-ripe or spoiled, so we all concluded they were just tasteless. I won't waste my money...+READ
