Dona Maria: Mexican Bright Spot in Suffern, NY

Dona Maria, open since spring, brings something different–and welcome–to Suffern. It’s Mexican food, “but nothing like Rockland has ever seen,” reports Deven Black; “much, much better than the canned beans and reheated glop” slung by some local competitors. Expect bright, authentic flavors in inventive, slightly dressed-up dishes that really work–like seared salmon, seasoned with a dusting of chiles and herbs, or a Mexico-and-beyond cheese plate of anejo, cotija, and Manchego, among other choices. “Everything is cooked fresh,” Deven adds, “except the beans and sauces, which are made the way they should be…very slowly.”

  • I can definitely vouch for the quality and service of the food recently and was so impressed with the authentic and tasty dishes that I had them cater a party at my house. The chile relleno was especially good.
The best thing is that the owner is genuinely interested in our comments and went out of his way to make the dining experience pleasurable..

  • The reviewer needs a date on the review. Dona Maria in Suffern, NY has had its ebbs and flows. As of 8/16/08, the tide is going out and has been for months. The food is no longer as fresh as it used to be. The staff isn't available and seem to prefer to hang out talking at the bar rather than serving the customers.

The concept was fantastic - Mexican food unlike the rest of the same old stuff. It worked for a while. I expect a bit of consistency in service and flavor but it just isn't anymore. My guess is IF they continue serving and cooking the way they have in the last six months, they will be gone within a year. Freebies of tequila shots are worth it only if the food and service are. Right now, I'd say to walk by it and find another restaurant. We're now driving into Tarrytown - it's a lot more gas but we get a lot better food and service.-COLLAPSE
