Hot, Fudgy Deliciousness

The newly renovated Bi-Rite Creamery (now with seats, but the lines are as long as ever) may mark a high point for the new-school ice cream sundae. "The best sundae I have ever tasted," artemis declares. david kaplan recommends a combo of salted caramel ice cream, fudge, and salted Marcona almonds, and possibly a house-made brownie or cookie.

"The best of the best for me is a hot fudge sundae at Mitchell's" made with toasted almond ice cream, says sfkusinera. There's no seating at Mitchell's (unless you count one tiny bench outside), but the St. Francis ice cream parlor, always a good place for a sundae, has Mitchell's these days.

"For old-fashioned sundaes, nowhere else compares" to Fenton's Creamery, says cakebaker, especially with "old-fashioned" freshly whipped cream. But sfkusinera dings their "so-so ice cream and hot fudge," despite the nice atmosphere. The fudge isn't the topping to get here, counters Robert Lauriston. Stick to the caramel sauce.

Balboa Cafe makes a great sundae in which both the ice cream and hot fudge match in deliciousness, says Mari. "The fudge was like melted dark chocolate without the overly sweet taste of the Fenton's fudge."

myst says Loard's in the East Bay has tasty ice cream that's better than Fenton's, plus creative sundaes.

And finally, despite being a tourist trap with mediocre ice cream, Ghirardelli's hot fudge puts its ice cream sundae over the top, hounds say. "Not necessarily the best ice cream, but surely one of the best hot fudge sundaes I've ever had," says sfkusinera.
