Getting Crafty

Tom Colicchio’s Craft is open in Century City, and brekkie_fan declares it’s well worth the round trip from Orange County.

Both the Los Angeles and New York Crafts get their produce from Santa Monica, and a crispy-fresh little gem salad with cipollini onions wrapped in bacon shows it hasn’t had to travel far. Roast quail is succulent and tasty; spaghetti alla chitarra is crazy fresh.

For dessert, take your pick from the glazed and fluffy signature doughnuts, a rich chocolate soufflĂ©, and assorted gelatos. There’s also a cheese plate.

While the NY outpost is dark and cozy, Century City is light and airy. It’s open for dinner only for now, with patio dining on the horizon and lunch service come August.

Tasty going down... less so coming back up.

Had dinner at Craft for the first time on Sat. night. The food was delicious, and the service was delightful. BUT, exactly 6 hours late, I was sick as a dog. I vomitted 19 times between 3am and 5 am. I had to call the New York restaurant to even get a phone number with a voicemail box that would answer on Sunday. I was given the number for the general manager. I explained what happened - that I had a lovely dinner, had contracted food poisoning, that I was fairly confident that the summer squash was to blame - that I wanted to inform him of that before any more of the dish was served and that he should call me if I had any questions. He called me back and left a voicemail saying that he was sorry I "didn't feel well, but the squash is roasted to order" and he "found it difficult to believe that could be to blame" but that I should call back if I wanted to speak further. I returned the call only to discover he had given me the wrong number - for the company's financial comptroller. When I spoke to the GM, he doubted out loud whether it was food poisoning because "that can't happen until 16 hrs later." I explained that food poisoning can take as long as 48 hrs and as little as 4-6 to appear, that in this case it had taken 6, and I didn't just "not feel well" but got sick from something I ate at his restaurant. His main concern seemed to be liability (which I certainly understand as an attorney myself, but is not a good recipe for customer service) and was worried whether I had a doctor's bill. I was pleasant and good humored about the situation, even stating that friends have eaten at the NYC restaurant for years and how nice my dinner was. Basically, he was given every opportunity to attempt make this right by offering me some kind of freebie which I might have taken him up on because heck, these things happens, and it's a new restaurant facing a learning curve with suppliers, etc., but he did no such thing. Merely suggested I "say hello" if I ever return to the restaurant. Ugh. This totally depletes my crush on Tom Colicchio...-COLLAPSE
