Bargain Lox in Greenpoint and Other Smoked-Fish Tips

Acme Smoked Fish sells its wares to such higher-end purveyors as Zabar’s, Citarella, and Russ and Daughters–and, one morning a week, to us retail-paying civilians. The public can buy top-shelf nova, lox, sable, trout, whitefish and more–at deep discounts–every Friday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Acme’s plant in Greenpoint. “I’ve gotten some amazing stuff there on Friday mornings,” says billhill. Go early–they tend to run out of the choice stuff.

Other Brooklyn hounds count on Schwartz’s for smoked fish. This old-school appetizing store in Borough Park comes through with great sable, herring, and whitefish or baked salmon salads, among other things, says Alisonleslie.

Fairway in Red Hook, like its sister stores, stocks first-rate lox and other smoked fish, says irvingk, who’s partial to their mild but flavorful Gaspe smoked salmon. gnosh also endorses Fairway’s fish but adds a caveat: Be sure to deal only with the regular fish staff. Early one morning, before the smoked fish man had arrived, the cheese guy cut gnosh’s lox, and the result was “disgusting thick chunks.”

In Midwood, the Orchard–better known for pricey but pristine fruit–also sells very good smoked fish, sliced to order, and house-made whitefish salad, jen kalb reports.

  • I've gotten pickled herring at Acme, and it's quite good. Still, it's not close to what you get at Russ & Daughters, where they slice plain pickled herring fillets and ladle their home-made sour cream and onions over it. Zabar's herring is in a different class, with very thick, obscenely luscious sour cream and numerous additions (bay leaves, black peppercorns, etc.).

I know the R&D owner, who says he picks out whole sides of fish individually. That's why the smoked fish at the specialty places (R&D, Zabar's, Barney Greengrass) is so much better than anything at the ordinary delis.

Howie - The real feinschmecker goes to R&D and samples half a dozen varieties, picking the particular fish that's best that day. Then you order their "block" (solid, unwhipped) cream cheese, which they keep in the back of the store only for the initiates. Then you go to the Kosher Bagel Hole on Coney Island Avenue near Avenue K in Brooklyn for real, unsweetened bagels fresh out of the oven, and then hurry home for the heavenly pleasure.-COLLAPSE

  • YOU PEOPLE ARE KILLING ME!!!! In California they don't know what good lox is and when you mention a biali you really put them over the edge. Each time I fly east I bring back two pounds of lox and 3 dozen biali....have to fight off the neighbors! Now I know why I want to return! Enjoy, you momsers!
