Jersey Subs in Los Angeles

For those searching for Jersey-style subs, the solution can be found at a new chain and recent invader of our Los Angeles shores: Jersey Mike's.

"I might get run off the board, but I thought Jersey Mike's was pretty good," says NAspy, who grew up on Pennsylvania hoagies and subs. "I'm thrilled to see Jersey Mike's getting some love here. I know it's a chain, but their cheesesteak is my favorite on this coast. And their subs are damned fine too."

But let's be clear: Folks are picking Jersey Mike's for its East Coast–style flavor, not for its overall excellence. "I'm from New Jersey and no other sub out here evokes a taste of home like Jersey Mike's," Mr Taster says. "Are there better subs than Jersey Mike's? Absolutely. ... But for a taste of NJ, that's the one."

wutzizname recommends Eagle Rock Italian Bakery as a real contender for excellent subs. "Great crusty rolls. Solid ingredients. And low prices too," wutzizname says. And Moose sends us to Cricca's Italian Deli for a sandwich with a good meat portion on fresh, crusty bread. "This is probably as close as you'll get in LA in terms of being comparable to a NJ style sub," Moose says.

  • Jersey Mike's is just Subway with more flair. The sandwiches are OK, but look at the meat & cheese in the refrigerated case: giant logs of processed, water soaked food product, made in their own factory. They don't even have real prosciutto, just something they call 'Proscutinni' or some similar name created by their marketing department.

  • Jesey Mikes - Pretty good for a chain, but using fresh crusty bread would make it better. Be sure to have the sub maker alternate the meat and cheese slices.

  • My wife likes Jersey Mikes subs. I like their cheesesteak more than I like their subs, but you have to keep a watchful eye on the sandwich maker to be sure you're getting provolone. They've kicked it up a notch with the availability of Cherry Pepper relish, a great addition along with the green peppers, onions, pepperoncini that I ask for. Their deli meats are "house branded," and I find them a little lower in flavor intensity than some better know brands. The rolls are very good.-COLLAPSE
