Falling back in love in the strangest place over food
I must say my favorite food find is Mr. Greek’s in Biloxi Mississippi. As you open the door to this tiny Greek establishment the ambience takes you back in time to old Grease. We were met at the door by a tiny older woman and led to our bistro table decked with a singled flower. Pictures of old Grease plaster the walls. The aroma of fresh baked baklava fills the air in the dimly lit room. My husband and I are filled with amazement over the history that fills this restaurant. We hold hands and talk exchange smiles things we have not done in years. I feel as if our love has been rekindled. There is now a fire where there was just smoke a few minutes ago.
It seemed as if it was only a few minutes and my Gyro had arrived. This is a taste I had longed for. We had moved to Mississippi three years ago and had not had Greek food since we arrived. That first bite into the fresh warm pita was amazing. The lamb was absolutely succulent. The cucumber sauce was like no other, sweet yet savory. The vegetables were fresh with just the right crunch. Was I in Heaven?
I thought nothing could top that moment. I was so wrong. Dessert has arrived. It is a large piece of warm fresh baked baklava, perfect for two. As we enjoyed our dessert we began to feed each other. Before long we were laughing, I felt like he was the only person in the room full of people. I looked into his eyes for the first time in years. I remember why I love him so much, something I long forgot.
My first trip to Mr. Greek’s has been about six months now. We have returned several times. Each time we return it has never been anything less than our first visit. I will be eternally grateful for that wrong turn we made that day that led us to Mr. Greek’s. Is there something magical in the air or food there? I think maybe it takes something simple to ground us. We as people are generally in a rush taking for granted the most important things in life, family! The next time you take a wrong turn and see a tiny restaurant that normally you would never enter, please do so. It may just save your life.
