Congratulations to the KC Masterpiece Tailgating Recipe Touchdown Challenge Winners!

The CHOW test kitchen has grilled, braised, and baked its way through the qualifying Tailgating Recipe Touchdown Challenge entries, and we are happy to announce the grand prize winner and runners-up! We tried baked beans, pulled chicken, grilled shrimp, jalapeño poppers, burgers, a few sandwiches, and more, making tallying the scores a challenge, but in the end the best-tasting dishes pulled ahead. Congratulations to all of the winners, and thanks to everyone who submitted a recipe and participated in the contest!

BIG SCORE SLIDERS

BIG SCORE SLIDERS
By FOODFROMTHEHEART
This recipe had us worried with all of the big flavors going on, including curry powder, pineapple, and garlic, but it made sense when everything came together. In fact, it was the combination of spices and textures that ultimately made these sliders interesting and delicious. We also liked that the recipe was clearly written and easy to follow, and was a great make-ahead sandwich for a tailgate party.

Once we figured out how to get this nearly 6-inch-tall sandwich piled with cucumbers, tomatoes, onion, lettuce, and bacon into our mouths, we really enjoyed it. The tangy acidity from the Italian dressing was a good contrast to the fatty bacon and mayo, and we liked the crunch from the extra vegetables.

Jalapeño BBQ Burgers

These burgers were so huge and full of flavor from barbecue sauce, cumin, and chili powder that no condiments were necessary. The jalapeños gave a nice texture to the patty, which overall reminded us of a slice of good meatloaf. The burgers were also very simple to prepare, making them an excellent tailgating choice.

Santa Maria Style Tailgate Beans

We liked the flavors and texture in this bean recipe from the ham-bacon combo, as well as the addition of a little heat from red chili sauce. This is a versatile, make-ahead side that would go with almost any grilled meat, and it's an ideal dish for feeding a tailgating crowd inexpensively.
