Food Fight: Desperation Dinner Challenge

We asked for a tasty, simple, and creative interpretation of a "desperation dinner." We found that each person is desperate in his or her very own way. So, in addition to the People's Choice, with the most votes, we've spread the love with an Editors' Choice and two Honorable Mentions for the recipes that would each make us happy at our most desperate moments.

And the winners are ...

The CHOW team hard at work in the test kitchen.

Lazy Single Girl's Peanutty Noodles

 By violet22

Savory and sweet, with good use of standard pantry items. We might date this lazy single girl if she cooked this for us.

CHOW editors say ...

Too much peanut butter. I feel like I need jelly.
Good garlic and ginger bite. Peas add semblance of healthiness.
Tastes like a fresh, delicious Trader Joe's satay in a box.

After the binge quick and dirty onion soup

 By PaulaT

It would take a true act of desperation to get us to make this recipe. But the people have spoken.

CHOW editors say ...

It smells like bad Chardonnay and tastes grossly fermented.
Nasty.
One-dimensional. Too many onions, not good balance.
Plus, after the binge I want more fat.

Hoppin' Jane

 By BlitzNYC

We liked the spice and the creative use of random canned items, although some said perhaps too random.

CHOW editors say ...

I loved the addition of the okra and the sausage. Would be happy to have this on a desperation night.
Nice combo of
textures.
I really don't think many people would have okra lying around. Cheater recipe.

Roasted Garlic and Flat Leaf Parsley Pasta

 By chezdeniseetlaudalino

This was a flavor and simplicity favorite, but some described it as a cop-out for its sheer unoriginality.

CHOW editors say ...

This is the obvious thing. No points for originality.
Good, reliable, easy.
But anything with Parmesan can't be all bad. Realistically desperate.
