The New College Cafeteria: Lobsters and Chocolate Fountains

College meal plans sure have changed from when I graduated in 19-mumble-mumble. The Hungry Beast maps out the top college cafeterias and food plans with a gallery sure to make ex-students turn green.

For instance, there’s Virginia Tech, where live lobsters swim in a tank, awaiting student orders, and the chefs poll students’ parents for favorite at-home recipes that are added to the menu. Or Boston College’s storied “Wonka-Ville,” with a chocolate bar that has a chocolate fountain, pastries, and fudge.

Man, that’s going to really aid in packing on the freshman 15.

  1. University of Cincinnati. 1983. Saga Food Service is pleased to present, as their main entree…. “Frankenpotato” . A baked potato, split, with a hot dog laying on top. Psychosexual implications aside, an absolute low in college food preparations.

  2. The fact that my current school, William and Mary, made the list at #13 makes me have serious doubts about the legitimacy of the rest of the list. We get the characteristic congealed turkey legs and misspelled vegetables (”cron”) that one would associate with really sketchy high school cafeterias.

    Weird.

  3. I just read an article in the NYT about cafeteria cutbacks at Harvard and Princeton. I’m sure campus food has evolved since I graduated 10 years ago(AYCE buffet of mainly simple carbs and mystery protein) but I don’t think such lavish dinners will last for long.
