Haribo and the Case of the Randy Lime

In case you’ve missed it, German candy giant Haribo is in a bit of hot water in Britain for its candy packaging. It’s not deceptive. And it doesn’t celebrate violence. But it sure is sexy for a candy wrapper.

Maoam boxes feature a randy lime engaged in what can most sanitarily be referred to as “shenanigans” with other fruits, including a lemon and a pair of exceedingly open-minded cherries.

The Telegraph reports:

“Simon Simpkins, a father of two, said he was shocked at the ‘pornographic’ poses when he bought the sour candy for his children Benjamin and Ofelia. Mr. Simpkins, of Pontefract, West Yorks, told The Sun: ‘The lemon and lime are locked in what appears to be a carnal encounter. The lime, who I assume to be the gentleman in this coupling, has a particularly lurid expression on his face. I demanded to see the shop manager and, during a heated exchange, my wife became quite distressed and had to sit down in the car park.’”

Simpkins sounds like a bit of a whinger here—but, to be fair, the lime really does look as though it’s getting away with something a bit beyond the innocent fun that you’d expect of a candy mascot.

Comments

  1. I don’t think it’s a lime – it’s some green cartoony guy. But sexy!

  2. It’s consensual. The lemon appears to be clearly enjoying the encounter. This is how I assumed Sprites were made.

  3. I seriously need to find these candies…

  4. Someone who names his daughter “Ofelia” really shouldn’t complain about things being suggestive.

Someone who engages in a “heated discussion” with a store manager over suggestive cartoon fruits is more than a bit of a whinger — he’s clearly a pervert.

  5. Making sprites-HA!

The poor wife, having to sit down in the car park…oh my.

Haribo is the maker of gummy bears, which are immensely popular in Germany, not only with children, but also with adults. Walk past any newsstand in the country and you’ll see that “adult” items are not deemed inappropriate for public/children’s viewing.

What is the lime/cartoony guy doing on the pink label? From what’s pictured here it looks like he’s on the receiving end of some fun. Has anybody seen the whole label?
