Britain’s Delicate Tipping Point

What’s a tip? Is it a gift? A lucrative bonus? Or a tool to top up pay rates to meet the national minimum wage?

A fight over tipping has flared up in Britain, where regulations are set to bring up restaurant workers’ wages (pre-tip) to meet national standards. The Independent reports on a spat between restaurant industry groups—which claim jobs are at stake—and the UK government, which claims that the change will have a minimal impact.

Pat McFadden, minister for employment relations, is quoted as saying:

“Consumers support tips not being included in basic pay; after all, it is the public’s money … There is no evidence that having a decent floor on wages is detrimental to jobs in recent years.”
