Japan’s Ultimate Olympic Sacrifice

In a bid to be at an ultimate level of preparedness for the ultimate athletic challenge, Japanese Olympic athletes are attending a very special boot camp wherein they are required to (overproduced drumroll here, please) … eat Chinese food.

That’s right: Reuters reports that they have to eat Chinese food in order to get ready for competing in China.

Japan’s National Training Centre will offer basic Chinese dishes such as noodles, cold spring rolls and fried catfish once a week in a dry run for the August 8-24 Games.

None of the Chinese food on offer will be diluted for Japanese taste buds, chefs even being ordered to make Japan’s staple miso soup without traditional stock, local media reported on Thursday.

The horror, the horror …

  1. ha ha .. The sad truth is (and I welcome debate here) the average corner Chinese restaurant is no match for the average corner Japanese joint. Cookie cutter Japanese food offers better quality food than its Chinese counterparts.

Pit the best Chinese against the best Japanese and it’ll always be a tie in this writer’s mind, because good food is good food.
