Hot or Not: Blueberry Coffee

In Mark Bittman’s Bitten blog for the New York Times, he shares his belief that “this flavored coffee business has gotten completely out of hand.” And he seems particularly flummoxed about the popularity of blueberry-flavored coffee, but he’s keeping an open mind, writing, “Dunkin’ Donuts is advertising it all over the place. I’ll have to get me some. Or stop complaining.”

But should anyone subject himself to blueberry coffee? Green Mountain Coffee Roasters offers a Fair Trade Wild Mountain Blueberry flavor, blueberry coffee is on tap at Dunkin’ Donuts, and New England Coffee has a Blueberry Cobbler Coffee—so somebody must be drinking it. Any fans out there?

I have to admit, I’m not entirely against flavored coffee myself. FreshDirect, a food delivery service here in the NYC area, offers its own variety called Sinful Delight, which is advertised as having “flavors of chocolate, vanilla, caramel and pecan.” The flavors are very, very subtle—it just takes like a rich coffee with a little sweetness that makes it a nice pairing with dessert. Any other suggestions for flavors that aren’t gross?

  1. I have been drinking blueberry coffee for about 3 years on and off. I love it, but as a dedicated Maine fan, how could I not? I also love any vanilla or cinnamon flavored coffees. I do all of my flavored coffee in the morning. I enjoy it very much!

  2. i must admit – i do love the 7-11 blueberry coffee better than dunkin donuts – and i also have had the blueberry cobler.
I am not your traditional coffee lover – i will only have it iced and love it nice & sweet. If you are a coffee purist – you might not enjoy has much :)

  3. Sometimes if I buy a variety of beans I’m not crazy about, I’ll put a little bit of a cinnamon stick in with the coffee beans when I grind them.

  4. Flavored coffee? I thought this was a food lovers site?

  5. I have mixed feelings on blueberry coffee. I used to work in an artisan coffee roaster and we specialized in roasting points and blending. Blueberry was one of the few flavors we couldn’t afford not to make, though, so I did a fair amount of experimenting with it.

In my humble opinion, the blueberry flavor, if done subtly is lost in hot coffee but comes out beautifully when iced. If it is too strong of a flavor it vacillates between acrid and candyish, neither of which are enjoyable.

So, I recommend finding a new subtle flavor and cooling it down!

  6. The better question is whether anyone should continue to subject himself to Mark Bittman? The man is a humorless reductionist windbag.

  7. grishnackh has a good point.

  8. Blueberry coffee is an abberation, as is all “flavored” coffee. Coffee is a cuppa joe, not a flowery concoction of added flavorings. ICK!
